The Washington Post Personalization team is seeking a Machine Learning Engineering Manager to lead a team of applied machine learning scientists in building the next generation of journalism-driven personalization systems. Lead, mentor, and manage cross-functional agile teams of applied machine learning scientists and collaborate with other technical staff to build and maintain scalable machine learning infrastructure.Provide leadership and guidance in problem-solving, ensuring best practices are followed for statistical analysis, model development, and machine learning techniques.Oversee the end-to-end development and deployment of machine learning models, ensuring they are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with organizational goals.Collaborate with business teams to align machine learning products with strategic objectives, deriving insights from large and complex datasets to inform feature and product development.Establish and implement processes, best practices, and tooling for continuous integration, delivery, and monitoring to ensure high-quality machine learning solutions.Manage the technical roadmap, balancing innovation with the need for stability and performance while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning within the team.Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.6+ years of experience in machine learning, data science, or applied artificial intelligence.2+ years of experience in managing and leading technical teams, with demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and develop engineering talent.2+ years of hands-on experience with Python and relevant ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).Experience in deploying ML models in production environments, including using cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and ML infrastructure tools (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker).Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with various machine learning techniques such as clustering, classification, sentiment analysis, time series analysis, and deep learning.Expertise in Reinforcement Learning and Recommendation Systems.Proficiency with MLOps practices, including continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, model versioning, and automated monitoring.Knowledge in Economics, Finance, or a related field to drive data-driven product alignment with business objectives.A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field is strongly preferred.Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is:
144,600.00 - 241,100.00 USD AnnualThe actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
