Manager, NDT/Responsible L3

Virgin Galactic is seeking a highly motivated Manager, NDT / Responsible L3 to support our NDT and Quality teams. Guided by our values, “Safety above All”, we proactively manage the risks inherent in human spaceflight through our daily actions in the design, assembly and Flight Operations efforts.

 

Primary tasks will be associated with the development and oversight of NDT inspection standards, principles and techniques.  The role will examine, question, evaluate and report objective evidence of results in accordance with Virgin Galactic and NDT industry Standards. Ensure work deliverables are prioritized based on production schedule, organizational goals, metrics and align by defining roles. Support the company strategy by holding ourselves and one another accountable for getting the work done.

 

Responsibilities

Responsible for Managing the NDT organization to ensure Airworthiness of the Flying Assets and their components.

Lead and manage a team of technicians including all performance management related tasks and team development 

Act as Responsible L3 for developing, qualifying, and approving NDT procedures, ensuring they meet industry standards and company requirements under NAS410 and VG standards. 

Develop, establish and streamline NDT techniques, ensuring they are effective and efficient for their specific applications, while assuring compliance with applicable company and regulatory requirements.

Drive safety behavior and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) awareness/prevention; ensure adherence to regulatory protocols and rules 

Coach, train, and transfer expertise to your team to drive projects to completions  

Develop and administer training and examinations as necessary to support qualification and certification of NDT Technicians under NAS410 and VG Guidelines.

Maintain qualifications records, certifications, proficiency examinations and oversight of required experience hours.

Collaborate effectively with Engineering & Process groups to develop and implement NDT acceptance criteria to meet damage tolerance requirements for Flying assets.

Evaluate and recommend innovative solutions, applications, and approaches required for meeting business objectives and assuring product integrity.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships between teams to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

Analyze complex NDT data and interpret results to identify and resolve systemic issues.

Effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences, collaborating with other departments and stakeholders. 

Conduct NDT inspections as needed to support operations.

 

Required Skills and Experience

ASNT Level III Certification in UT and at least two other methods including but not limited to ET,PT, MT.

A minimum of 6 years’ Experience in the NDT field.

At least 3 years’ experience as a Level III with a company performing aerospace (or related) NDT process development including daily operations.

In depth understanding of NDT Methods and Standards including but not limited to UT, ET, PT, RT.

Experience with Manufacturing methods and inspection of composites and metallics.

Experience with advanced UT Inspection methods.

Experience with Technical writing (acceptance reports, inspection techniques, procedures/ specifications).

Experience in RCCA (Root Cause Corrective Action) processes.

Experience in aerospace manufacturing and flight test environment.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.

Strong team player.

Ability to step outside of conventional process to create/implement inspection solutions (“think outside the box” approach).

Excellent computer skills, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

 

Preferred Skills and Experience

Experience with automated/semi-automated NDT inspection systems.

Experience in vendor surveillance (qualification and periodic auditing)

FAA MRO or MFG setting Experience.

BMI Resin system Experience.

Strong understanding of engineering and manufacturing functions

Excellent knowledge of component assembly, both subassembly and final top-level assembly

Strong understanding of schedule, quality, and budget relationship

Working knowledge of quality management processes

Proven ability to lead, motivate, and build teams

Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills, combined with a strong commercial acumen to measure the potential impact of each decision

Knowledge of lean manufacturing (Kaizen/Six Sigma) philosophies and tools a plus

Demonstrated computer and analytical skills including proficiency in MS Suite and comfortable with data analytics/mining

Ability to ensure effective collaboration across teams

Ability to work independently and cross‐functionally

Set clear objectives and milestones

Communicate clearly and with transparency

Lead by example in strong safety forward thinking, practice good housekeeping, tool control, recognizing the importance of properly handling hazardous materials and, chemicals

Familiar with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $99,498.00–$151,719.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
