Highlights of the job

 

EPCOR’s Water Services group is hiring four (4) Managers to join various teams supporting Linear Asset Construction, Linear Asset Maintenance and Linear Asset Services in a full-time permanent capacity and will all be based out of our Aurum site in Edmonton, AB.

 

We are filling the following Manager roles:

 

Local System Construction - is accountable for the execution of activities related to wastewater (WWC) local system construction performed by in-house crews. Activities include scheduling of project work, escalation investigation and resolution, developing budgets, regularly updating forecasts, as well as managing employees including recruitment and performance management within the Local System Construction team. This also includes ensuring that established work priorities are followed, while fostering a safe work environment through a fully staffed and qualified workforce.

 

System Maintenance - is accountable for the execution of activities related to the high pressure flushing and hydro-vac and Maintenance of drainage assets. This includes administering a fleet of combination units and managing planned and reactive work to ensure wastewater system availability for the customer.

 

Responsive Maintenance - is accountable for the execution of customer-initiated appointment based maintenance and inspection of customer services, the maintenance and inspection of all Storm Water Management Facilities, and supporting response to emergent and emergency situations as required. This position will also take on the planning and scheduling activities for all WWC Maintenance activities.

 

Logistic Services - is accountable for the performance and safety of the Logistic Services team within the Field Services operational area. Accountabilities include ensuring optimal utilization of specialized construction equipment, including tandem trucks, sanitary servicing and qualified operators. Activities also include project planning, managing contracted vendors and suppliers to EPCOR standards of practice, escalation investigation and resolution, developing budgets, regularly updating forecasts, as well as managing employees including recruitment and performance management within the Logistic Services team. This includes ensuring that established work priorities are followed, while fostering a safe work environment through a fully staffed and qualified work force.

What you’d be responsible for

 

In the Manager role you are accountable to the Senior Manager of that area and will have the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to these):

 

Providing input to the appropriate teams plans and directions, ensuring an appropriate understanding of the EUI and Operations strategy and ensuring on-going effective positioning and appropriate relationships between your team and other Manager positions in Water Services and in the rest of EUI.Developing and implementing appropriate (3 – 12 month) deliverables within the context of the Business Plan (including mission, vision, values, strategic positioning, operational plan and resource plan).Ensuring deliverables of direct report positions are aligned and integrated, appropriate (1 day – 3 month time horizon) and include performance (what by when) metrics.Creating and managing a strong team of employees, including determination of optimal numbers, recruitment, retention and development.Providing input and direction on new technology/process improvement and implementation to ensure ongoing positioning of relationships between your team and other Managers in Water Services and the rest of EUI.Supporting a team of “zero-injury” focused employees by:Focusing on peer-to-peer safety discussions and interventions.Reviewing safe work plans and day to day work practices.Fostering an environment of pro-active safety reporting (i.e. near misses, interventions).

Specific to:

Local System Construction:Providing inputs to budgets and forecasts for the completion of Local System Construction work.Reporting on key metrics and ensuring overall administration of any assigned defined scope local system projects.Ensuring work order accuracy and active management of work performed in Local System Construction.Identifying work suitable for in-house construction crews through consultation with Project Management.:Identifying opportunities for trenchless rehabilitation by: Conducting research on emerging technologies and trends in trenchless rehabilitation including blue light relining; Assessing the feasibility, benefits and costs of new technologies and innovations; andLeading the implementation of new technologies and processes ensuring they are integrated smoothly into existing operations.System Maintenance:Identifying necessary budget requirements for the provision of shift crew coverage.Providing input into system expansion design through application of relevant expertise.Providing input into network rehabilitation programs, including manpower and equipment allocation planning.Ensuring the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics including:All capital, preventative and proactive preventative maintenance work is performed on the wastewater collection network, on time and on budget within guidelines established by the PBR.Developing, implementing and reviewing WWC Maintenance processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements and ensure mitigation of risks.Ensuring fleet, equipment and tool availability for the team.Developing strong SOPs for the area which ensure work is being done efficiently and safely.Ensuring that preventative maintenance work is performed to industry standards and EPCOR processes and procedures.Responsive Maintenance:Ensuring the sustained operation of the entire WWC system within the City of Edmonton.Providing input into system expansion design through application of relevant expertise.Execution of inspections for the catch basin and manhole repair program including budget and equipment analysis/utilization.Developing and fostering relationships with City of Edmonton departments where touch points exist on program development to ensure customer satisfaction and regulatory requirements are met.Logistic Services:Contractor Resources ManagementDetermining the requirement for hired equipment or contracted work to ensure shareholder value. Ensuring that equipment, resources and personnel are available to meet the customer demands.Operational Excellence:  Ensuring adherence to processes, procedures, and standards.Identifying and implementing process changes to ensure effective, efficient service delivery.Monitoring, measuring and reporting performance metrics.Analyzing and identifying issues impacting operational performance and leading initiatives for continuous improvement to ensure customer satisfaction, productivity and financial performance metrics are achieved.Supporting continuous improvement within the Field Services group by exploring new technology or work procedures to further improve efficiencies or the safety of frontline workers.

 

What’s required to be successful

 

Qualifications, experience and behaviours you possess are:

 

Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a Diploma in Engineering Technology from a recognized post-secondary educational institute.For an Engineer: P.Eng. designation with APEGA (or eligible for registration with APEGA).For an Engineering Technologist: C.E.T. designation with ASET (or eligible for registration with ASET).For candidates that do not meet the educational requirements as listed above you may still be considered if you have an equivalent level of direct experience leading operational teams in a utility environment.Experience that includes:5+ years specializing in a water/wastewater utility environment.5+ years in a management/supervisory role.3+ years with project management.Working with various programs such as; Micro Station/DRAINS, IVARA, GeoFIT, MS Office, SharePoint and Oracle.Proven Knowledge of:Budget and scheduling practices.Industry work practices, procedures, standards and safety applications.Ability to:Effectively manage frontline unionized employees including performance management and professional development.Work collaboratively with multiple departments within Water Services and EPCOR as a whole.Communicate with empathy to customers and de-escalate situations when they arise.Analyze complex technical information and make timely decisions.Apply relevant knowledge and skills to identify and manage risks.Liaise and develop networks with both internal and external contacts.Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License. Ability to qualify for and maintain an EPCOR driver's permit.A Driver Abstract (5yr. Commercial type) may be required.Limited to 6 demerits or less.Access to a reliable vehicle.

 

Other important facts about this job

 

This is a professional level Management position that typically works 40 hours per week. As part of the Management Team with Water Services you are required to participate in the Manager on-call rotation. While working (or on-call) you must be fit for duty as this is a risk-sensitive position. Please note that you will need to have access to a reliable vehicle to travel to various sites as part of your weekly accountabilities. You will be reimbursed for your mileage in accordance with EPCORs mileage reimbursement policy.
