Humboldt Redwood Company, LLC (HRC) is seeking an experienced Manager, Silviculture to join our forestry team located in Scotia, CA! This is an exempt position, the base salary for this position is $100,000.00 to $150,000.00. Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education and/or experience. Please keep in mind that that the range published is the full base salary. We also offer a generous benefits package.
In aggregate, The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.
The Silviculture Manager leads a team of Silviculture Foresters in managing forest regeneration and young stand development across large industrial timber or state forest lands. Key responsibilities include overseeing seedling procurement, managing nursery contracts, planning forest treatments (e.g., site preparation, planting, thinning, and forest health management), and ensuring compliance with state forestry practices and safety protocols.
Responsibilities Guide and support a team of Silviculture Foresters in planning and executing forest regeneration and management activities.Coordinate training, field reviews, and technical updates.Seedling Procurement & Nursery Management:Develop and manage strategies to secure high-quality, cost-effective seedlings from multiple nurseries.Evaluate nursery proposals, assess seedling quality, and ensure adherence to contract specifications.Maintain strong relationships with nursery representatives and manage contract logistics (ordering, invoicing, record-keeping).Plan, budget, and oversee treatments such as site preparation, planting, vegetation management, and pre-commercial thinning.Collaborate with senior management to assess and prioritize treatments to meet economic and operational objectives.Ensure compliance with California Forest Practices and pesticide regulations.Promote safety programs, develop Job Safety Analysis procedures, and monitor field conditions.
Travel Requirements:
Local travel by company vehicle (up to 75% of time) and regular overnight trips, including occasional travel to California, Oregon, and British Columbia.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or related field required.Minimum of 10 years managing silviculture programs on large industrial timber or state forest lands, preferably in western North America.California Registered Professional Forester (RPF) license preferred but not required.California Pest Control Advisors (PCA) License (or eligibility to obtain within 2 years).Valid driver’s License and ability to operate company vehicles and occasional ATVs.Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spreadsheets, and database software.Strong knowledge of forestry best practices, forest health management, and related technical methods.
