Manager, Site Reliability Engineering

At Personalis, we are transforming the active management of cancer through breakthrough personalized testing. We aim to drive a new paradigm for cancer management, guiding care from biopsy through the life of the patient. Our highly sensitive assays combine tumor-and-normal profiling with proprietary algorithms to deliver advanced insights even as cancer evolves over time. Our products are designed to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) and recurrence at the earliest timepoints, enable selection of targeted therapies based on ultra-comprehensive genomic profiling, and enhance biomarker strategy for drug development. Personalis is based in Fremont, California.

Summary:

The Manager of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) will lead the transformation of the organization’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) Architecture capabilities to enable data driven decisions. The candidate will work with partners across the organization, from lab operations to finance, to architect, build, and maintain integrated solutions with lab automation. This is a hands-on role with the opportunity to lead a small team of engineers to perform operational support, and continuous improvement of LIMS software.

Responsibilities:

Act as a scalability and reliability champion as a trusted partner of business operations leads by brainstorming solutions & technology options and designing automated integrated solutions that drive laboratory processes. Lead the site reliability engineering team in supporting the 24/7 lab operations to ensure continuous operations.  Lead business conversations identifying user needs and defining requirements using issue tracking and data driven approaches. Drive design reviews and deploy robust solutions through CI/CD  in close collaboration with business and other informatics teams. Understand data systems architecture & maintain data catalogs with source to target mappings / functional specs creation, documentation and communicate with other teams. Manage the maintenance and ensure the smooth operation of legacy systems. Develop and implement advanced replacement systems that cater to current use cases while leveraging updated data architecture and technology stack.  Be a champion of software best practices in partnership with QA by conducting risk analysis, identifying test data, and improving CI/CD within Informatics and stakeholder  teams aimed at high quality deliverables.

Requirements:

8+ years of experience in software engineering, site reliability engineering, and/or devops. 3+ years of hand-ons software management with a track record of growing people and teams. 3+ years of life sciences domain experience and laboratory software experience such as Clarity, Lab Vantage, or other laboratory information management systems.  Experience working in CAP/CLIA environments and utilizing version control and documentation as managerial tools. Strong communication skills, written and verbal; ability to understand user needs and present architectures and their implications in a clear, concise manner. Expertise in software engineering technologies: Python, databases, CI/CD and and best practices. A deep understanding of software engineering principles and practices.

The hiring range for this position is $190,000 to $238,000 per year, which may factor in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. Our full-time regular positions also include an annual performance-based bonus (or a sales incentive plan) and long-term incentive units (equity) provided as part of our compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
