Position Purpose:  The Drymill Manager will have overall responsibility for the daily operation of the Drymill. The successful applicant will be responsible but not limited to Safety, Production, Quality, Recovery, Cost and Employee Wellbeing in the Drymill.

The successful applicant will also be responsible for ensuring that all Company policies and procedures (ie SLA’s and SOP’s) are adhered to and implemented by all staff and 3rd party contractors situated in his/her area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

People and Safety

Promote and drive a culture of Zero HarmEffective people management and communication skillsKeeping employees motivated to perform their duties to the best of their abilities.Assuring that the safety awareness is at a high level on a daily basis.Managing workplace safetyManaging safe behaviourEnsure that the correct PPE is always worn.Conduct toolbox talks weekly.Ensure that machines and guards are in a good condition and safe to work on.Assure that high levels of housekeeping are maintained.Provide training where necessary.

Production:

Assure production planning is done.Setting and achieving daily production targets.Continuously look for ways to improve productivity.Do the order planning.Manage the nightshift through Supervisors and Team leaders.Keep overtime to a minimum.Discipline employees where necessary and chair hearings.Manage breakdowns.Manage the manufacturing plant, yard as well as Kilns & Boilers.

Stock Management

Assuring accurate record keeping.Assure stacking rules are followed, and that stock is safely storedManage all moving equipment.Assure trucks are accurately and timeously dispatched.Responsible for the monthly stock take.Assure a FIFO (First In First Out) system is followed at all times.Assure that the hardstands are in a good condition.

Recovery & Quality:

Assure that material received from the Wetmill is according to specification.Assure machines are set up and that hourly quality samples are taken.Assure that quality control measures are in place.Keep waste to the minimum.Always look for ways to increase recovery.

Cost

Assure that the budget is not exceeded.Manage the usage of consumables.Manage repair and maintenance cost on machinery and buildings.

Operational Excellence:

Continuously look for ways to reduce cost and be more productive.Document learnings and improve on SOP’s

Qualifications

B-tech degree in Wood Technology, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management.Six Sigma Green Belt Certified advantageous

Experience

10 Years Production Management experience in a sawmill or similar environment.

Skills and Knowledge

Results drivenSound business and commercial acumen.Computer literacy (SAP, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).Assertive with good communication, organisational and negotiation skills.Sound people management with extensive knowledge of Industrial Relations.Good knowledge of OSHACT Safety legislation and procedures is essential.
