This Manager & Counsel position will provide legal support to American Express’s central business and support teams globally. The successful candidate will report to a Director of the Global Enterprise Services legal team. 

How will you make an impact in this role?

Provide strategic and pragmatic legal support to business clients across key product and service development initiatives. Draft and negotiate a wide range of international commercial agreements. Manage the development of centralised legal support for multi-regional business processes. Protect our customers and business clients by ensuring projects meet all legal and regulatory requirements. Manage input from national legal teams to support global initiatives and agreements. Identify and effectively manage legal risks. Lead and project manage initiatives and tasks within the General Counsel's Organization ("GCO"). Engage with other regulatory and operational functions, to ensure seamless legal, regulatory and policy advice. Provide strategic, tactical, and other general guidance and advice to management, whether on specific projects or transactions or in relation to standard business processes, to ensure the organization understands and complies with legal and regulatory requirements. Monitor relevant legislative developments and support strategies to identify and manage legal risks. Proactively protect the brand and reputation of American Express through legal advice and guidance to governance and management.

Minimum Qualifications:

A lawyer qualified in England and Wales, ideally with significant post-qualification experience at a reputable law firm or international company. Required Skills: Demonstrable track record in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements. Excellent research and analytical skills. Ability to manage and prioritise a wide variety of matters and clients. Excellent oral and written communication skills - able to communicate clearly, concisely, effectively and persuasively with internal and external clients and senior management. Excellent relationship management and people skills – ability to become a trusted advisor to business clients, adapt communication style to a broad mix of people and personalities, and form and maintain strong working relationships. Solid understanding of commercial law. Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines and clients’ expectations. Fluent in English.  Required Attributes: Strategic thinker with excellent commercial awareness. An adaptable, strong team player who thrives on collaboration and understands the individual part they play in the success of a global team. Inquisitive, and takes initiative with their workload, learning and development. A global outlook, an ability to work with colleagues and clients across the globe, and an understanding and sensitivity towards different cultures.
