Position Responsibilities Protects and expands the city’s urban landscape in street right-of-ways, parks and other property for the City of Indianapolis residents and business so that environmental, aesthetic, and safety benefits are maximized Oversees the activities related to the overall management of the city’s natural resources including community landscapes, the urban forest and associated green spaces. Provides management and direction to professional contractors in Forestry and Horticulture. Develops and conducts presentations promoting the community landscape and urban forest for local, regional, and national audiences. Plans and manages capital renovation projects in the overall community landscape. Reviews plans, drawing, and cost projections, for public projects in the parks, streets, and green spaces. Recommends the design of new parks and streetscapes, changes to existing park, and other public landscape sites. Directs the implementation of changes to existing park and landscape sites; coordinate park and street tree maintenance; construction activities with other city departments and divisions; and, with outside agencies. Serves as liaison with MECCA on storms and emergencies relating to trees. Coordinates KIB’s (Keep Indianapolis Beautiful) plan to plant 100,000 trees in 10 years. Serves as liaison between the department and utility companies regarding permits. Represents the department on tree boards and neighborhoods. Organizes and establishes activities designed to involve volunteers in appropriate park and landscape projects; develops and implements computerized tracking systems for tree and park maintenance; recommends landscape and urban forestry policies and procedures. Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for tree and landscape operations. Directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for the tree and landscape operation program. Identifies opportunities for improving customer service delivery methods and procedures. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in urban forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture, or related field, and a minimum of five (5) years of progressive related work experience, with at least two (2) of those years in a supervisory capacity. One (1) year of related work experience may be substituted for each year of required education. Effective budget management, oral and written communication, staff development and computer skills are required. Knowledge of landscape materials and maintenance requirements are required. Valid Indiana operator’s license is also required. Independent Judgment Independent judgment is regularly utilized when there are no available policies and procedures. Errors in judgment may cause inconsistencies and inconveniences as well s regulatory, safety, and budgetary problems.
