Manager of Decision Support
Overview Develops strategic analysis in coordination with senior leaders and organizes market analysis activities. Furnishes other strategic and business analyses to assess the operational and market position of the health system. Uses primary and secondary market research and other data analytic tools to provide in-depth information about current and future markets, customers, and competitors. Provides guidance and support for new and existing program evaluations, business plan developments, benchmarking studies, and cost accounting activities. Also serves as support for the Decision Support team and department and assists in the creation and maintenance of pro forma reports and other adhoc data analysis needs. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Prepares business/market analyses of current and potential service areas, including market share analysis, demographics, payer, utilization, patient origin, and physician need assessments. Researches and compiles information needed for internal and external reports for presentation to executive management, the Board of Directors, and outside consultants. Assists the Decision Support team in the development and creation of pro-forma and other profit and loss analysis utilizing a variety of data intelligence tools. Uses resources to build competitive intelligence and keeps management informed of market developments and current events which may affect strategic direction. Identify, analyze, and prioritize growth opportunities and service line development reporting. Assists in right sizing efforts when opportunities cease to exist and utilizes data and decision support tools in these reports. Lead interdepartmental projects working closely with executives, physicians, and other leadership groups to complete analysis. Prepare written reports and presentations outlining findings and recommendations. Present to various administrative committees, physicians, and executive leadership. Establish, maintain, and act as the primary subject matter expert on various internal and external databases and systems. This includes responsibility for the decision support system, cost accounting system, and long-range planning software, coordinating the purchases of data/systems from external organizations, and developing internal databases. Develop audits and controls to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the systems. Manages organizational survey projects through all phases, including research design, questionnaire development and completion, sample selection, data analysis, and reporting, such as IDPH annual hospital questionnaire, AHA hospital survey, hospital association surveys and other organizational surveys. Educate finance staff, management, and executive leadership on various financial topics. Train operational staff on the use of the systems. Serve as a resource to department managers and Mercyhealth executives in the interpretation of financial information. Train and develop other finance staff on the use of various software applications including the decision support system and the cost accounting system. Work directly with financial staff to ensure the accuracy of the financial systems. Attend meetings with Senior Management and Clinical Directors, when necessary, to explain and interpret findings as well as interpret additional reporting needs of these groups. Communicates effectively with all levels of the organization to understand all the variables inherent in the reporting data. Supervise the activities of the Decision Support and Senior Financial Analysts. Assist the Director of Finance and CFO with other projects as assigned. Provides internal, competitor and regional market data, analyzing demographics, population trends, service line data and competitor activity.Compiles and interprets data, completes executive summaries and presentations outlining significant findings and trends. Researches and evaluates new technologies and services in terms of market differentiation and competitor offerings. Develops, prepares, and presents key complex strategic analyses including development of methodologies analyzing demographic, competitor and medical staff, physician productivity, physician manpower studies, payer mix and employer components, feasibility studies, regional prioritization, market assessments, etc. Uses sophisticated planning, analytical, and research tools to ensure provision of a quality product. Develops analyses, databases, and other tools for more efficient management of information. Identifies new analysis and research methodologies, tools, and resources. Performs other data collection, ad hoc analysis and duties, as assigned. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree, with five years relevant experience required, with two years in a healthcare environment. Master’s degree preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to interact and work with all executive and staff levels. Self-motivated and able to work independently without continuous supervision. Able to multitask and take responsibility for producing measurable results within deadlines. Flexible and capable of adapting to different roles in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Experienced user of Epic, Microsoft Office applications, StrataJazz, and Clarity reporting is preferred. SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands to operate a keyboard repetitively; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to handle finger and feel, and reach. The employee must exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include constant close vision and frequent ability to adjust focus, particularly as it relates to computer screens. LEVEL OF SUPERVISION Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; employee adherence to annual education and certification requirements SUPERVISES Directly supervises financial and decision support analysts. Supervisory responsibilities are conducted in accordance with directives of management, the organization’s policies, and applicable laws.
