Manager of General Accounting

The Manager of General Accounting will play a pivotal role in overseeing all aspects of financial accounting operations within the University. This role involves ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance with accounting principles and university policies. The manager will report to the Director of General and State accounting, lead a team of accounting professionals, and work closely with various departments to support financial reporting and analysis.

Responsibilities:

Manage all aspects of financial accounting processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely closure of financial records.Oversee the preparation and maintenance of general ledger accounts, ensuring timely and accurate recording of financial transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and university policies.Manage the month-end closing processes.Ensure timely and accurate reports are submitted to the Virginia Department of Accounts as required.Provide insightful monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial analyses, highlighting key performance areas.Coordinate and review journal entries, ensuring proper classification and documentation of transactions.Identify opportunities for process optimization and efficiency enhancements within the finance function, implementing best practices.

Serve as a key liaison with other university departments, providing financial accounting expertise and collaboration on projects.Supervise and mentor the general accounting team, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence.Stay abreast of changes in accounting standards, regulations, and industry best practices, and ensure compliance and integration into university accounting practices.Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by senior management.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree required (Graduate degree preferred) in accounting, finance, business administration, economics, management, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years required, 8 years preferred demonstrating progressive experience in finance and accounting roles, with at least 4 years in a leadership capacity.Active CPA license is strongly preferred.Experience in the higher education sector or non-profit organizations preferred.Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systemsStrong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and trends.Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory compliance.

Strong attention to detail Efficient in troubleshooting accounting issues. Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting insights and   recommendations. Capable of managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Able to meet deadlines while ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory Capability to develop and interpret advanced report requirements. Strong ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Ability to provide guidance and training to team members. Influences decision-making through data-driven insights. Demonstrated experience mentoring and leading a team of professional team members.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $100K - $130k per year commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
Experience: At least five years of experience in an accounting function with some supervisory experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
