Responsibilities

This job is responsible for organizing, planning, managing and evaluating clinical and management activities for the designated department and in accordance with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) policies/standards/procedures and applicable regulatory/accreditation requirements. An incumbent actively participates in the management activities and overall operations of the Perioperative Service Line to support the continuity and quality of patient care and foster inter-departmental communication/collaboration.

Work includes:

1) ensuring that overall goals relating to productivity, quality of care, patient satisfaction and/or growth in market share are achieved;

2) developing/implementing/monitoring quality improvement initiatives to enhance/streamline current procedures/processes;

3) performing ongoing performance/process improvement activities (e.g. service recovery, identifying/responding to negative quality trends, ensuring survey readiness) and

4) managing/developing clinical staff in the delivery of patient care and related support services.

Work requires knowledge of the standards, practices, tools/equipment relating to management of perioperative services. An incumbent participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team working towards attaining the mission and objectives of the organization, and for ensuring compliance with standards of patient care/practice, safety/risk management guidelines and applicable regulatory requirements. Work requires considerable expertise in leadership, supervisory skills, problem solving, patient advocacy and public relations.


Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, and four years related work that would demonstrate attainment of requisite job knowledge/abilities, including two years in a charge nurse/leadership position (or equivalent).

BSN or Bachelors’ Degree in a related field is preferred.

Job Knowledge/Abilities:

- Knowledge of the principles, practices, standards, techniques, protocols and tools/equipment of the nursing profession in general, and of the perioperative clinical nursing specialization.

- Knowledge of FHS policies and standards, and legal regulatory/accreditation requirements applicable to matters within designated scope of responsibility.

- Knowledge of Medical Necessity criteria and published healthcare coding conventions applicable to health information management.

- Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee supervision, development and performance management.

- Ability to understand financial and/or operational reports, analyze data, identify improvement opportunities and implement effective responses.

- Ability to identify compliance deficiencies and/or systemic weaknesses and implement timely corrective action to forestall or remedy.

- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, interpret requirements and draw valid conclusions.

- Ability to develop and implement effective policies, standards and procedures relating to matters under defined scope of responsibility.

- Ability to demonstrate effective supervisory skills, including developing clear performance expectations, hiring, coaching, conflict management, evaluating, resolving performance problems, and group facilitation.

- Ability to work effectively in stressful situations, and appropriately prioritize multiple and conflicting priorities/demands.

- Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills, including the ability to serve as role model, initiator in problem-solving, decision-making, delegating, and communicating of ideas and information.

- Ability to maintain flexibility, cooperation, and participate in cross-organizational performance improvement activities.

Licensure/Certification:

- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Washington State Board of Nursing.

- Specialty certification (e.g. CNOR, Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse [CPAN], Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse [CAPN] is preferred.

- Current healthcare provider BLS certification.
