Responsibilities

The Emergency Medicine Pharmacist Clinical Manager is a member of a broader local pharmacy leadership team and is responsible for managing pharmacy clinical operations and services to the Emergency Department at Mayo Clinic Hospital – St. Mary’s in Rochester, MN. This individual is a recognized pharmacy leader and provides strong, visible, values driven leadership and advocacy for pharmacy and Emergency Medicine, along with supervising the Emergency Medicine pharmacist team. They manage pharmacy clinical operations and services within the Emergency Department that are aligned with the overall pharmacy department program, incorporates best practices, emphasizes the safety and optimized outcomes of our patients, and delivers the highest value care to our patients and the organization. Ensures incorporation, alignment with and support of departmental and institutional strategic vision, direction and priorities. Manages pharmacy services to ensure that all quality, legal, regulatory and accreditation standards are met or exceeded. Actively participates in and supports pharmacy education programs and scholarly activity. 

Job responsibilities for the Emergency Medicine Pharmacist Clinical Manager include providing quality, comprehensive bedside patient care as part of a multidisciplinary team, and response to house-wide medical codes at least 50% of their time. Clinical services consist of direct patient care at the bedside, recommendations regarding drug therapy, and identification of drug-related problems. Situational awareness and task prioritization in the ED are enhanced through electronic automated alerts for resuscitations (e.g. trauma, medical, stroke, STEMI, toxicology, procedural sedation, intubation). Active participation in medical decision-making is expected, valued, and carried out through progressive collaborative practice agreements in the ED. Pharmacists partake in medication ordering and drug preparation in emergent situations to facilitate patient care. Clinical consultations and participation in resuscitations through emergency telepharmacy and telemedicine services support ED providers in the regional health care system.  Providing didactic lectures, simulation training and orientation for ED multidisciplinary team members is expected, as is precepting of pharmacy students, PGY1, and PGY2 EM and critical care specialty learners. 

Academic appointment and progression through academic rank, involvement in scholarly activities including quality initiatives, and multidisciplinary research are encouraged and supported through extensive institutional and departmental resources.



Qualifications

Qualifications:

Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy. Doctor of Pharmacy degree (or Pharmacy BS degree if graduated before 2000). Completion of an accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency and a minimum of 1-year applicable pharmacy leadership experience; or a minimum of 3 years applicable pharmacy leadership experience. Applicable experience includes providing, developing, implementing and overseeing progressive pharmacy clinical services in an integrated healthcare system and/or proven history of providing progressive services and leadership as a pharmacist.

Preferred Experience: PGY2 training in emergency medicine or critical care, and/or equivalent experience of three years in emergency medicine practice, as well as a minimum of 1-year applicable pharmacy leadership experience.  

Additional Qualifications: 

Project management and coordination skills. Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications. Strong commitment and evidence of achieving excellence. Proven history of successfully working in a team environment. Communicates effectively. Evidence of alignment with Mayo Clinic values. 

The following are preferred:  

Evidence of committee or leadership involvement in state and/or national professional organizations  Evidence of involvement in quality improvement and/or research  Completion of leadership or management educational programs (e.g., Master’s degree in related field, ASHP or ACCP leadership program, or institutional leadership curriculum)  Supervisory experience  Academic rank 

License or certification:

License to practice Pharmacy in the State of Minnesota or eligibility for licensure.
