The Design Manager will oversee a group of designers and collaborate with both internal departments and external consulting firms in a fast paced, demanding environment. The Design Manager will be responsible for managing a prototype, ensuring work aligns with strategic goals. This position will need to provide clear, detailed instruction to the team, balancing workload effectively while fostering a collaborative and innovative atmosphere. Strong leadership skills, the ability to adapt quickly, and a track record of delivering high quality results under tight deadlines are key for success in this role.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide assistance to the design team
Review and understand construction documents, especially civil and site related information
Input budgets and timeframes for projects, and help keep the team on track to meet those
deadlines and goals
Manage prototype updates based on consistent field issues that come up, or to maintain code
compliance.
Coordinate and communicate with outside consultants and other development personnel.
Contact jurisdictions to help push projects through the permitting process
Manage designer and consulting team workloads to maintain equal distribution. Hire additional
outside consulting teams as needed.
Review and approve invoices up to specified amount, and make sure budgets are updated on a
regular cadence to reflect unexpected overages or savings.
Travel as needed for special projects.
Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Interact with Designers, Architects, Engineers, General Contractors, Project Managers, Store
Operations, Legal, SAC, Expansion Committee, and Maintenance.
All other duties as assigned.
SKILLS/EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/ABILITIES
Required:5 years’ experience in civil design
2 years’ experience in leading teams
Ability to shift from one task to another quickly
Proficiency in AutoCAD
Previous experience managing a prototype
Ability to multitask, critically think, negotiate, and coordinate
Excellent communication, both written and verbal
Quick to learn, and open to change
Willingness to review processes and find suggestions for refinement and improvement
Highly motivated with exceptional critical thinking skills
BS in civil engineering from an accredited university with subsequent continuing education courses
5 years’ experience with civil engineering firm
Previous experience with commercial retail design
Photoshop knowledge desired
Experience with Lucernex, Pulley, and Procore
