Managing Editor

The University of Virginia seeks applicants for the position of Managing Editor of New Literary History. NLH is a first-tier quarterly journal in literary studies with an institutional and individual subscription base in the thousands and a vital presence on the grounds of the University as a focal point for critical conversations in the humanities. Candidates with a masters or terminal degree may be eligible to teach one course per semester in the Department of English.

The Managing Editor will oversee all aspects of the journal’s operations, financial, and staff infrastructure and assist the Editor with the day-to-day processes necessary to running a quarterly journal with a high circulation. The position requires an intellectually curious and detail-oriented colleague capable of working independently and solving problems quickly as they arise. The Managing Editor serves as head copyeditor; supervises and trains several graduate student assistants on wage assignments; corresponds with scholars based in the US and overseas during all phases of production; liaises with the publisher and deals promptly with unexpected glitches or delays in the production process; tracks hundreds of submissions annually on Excel; manages the journal’s finances; and assists the editor in the organization of conferences and other events.

Required qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in related fieldAt least five years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Terminal degree (MFA or Ph.D.) in relevant field granted by July 31, 2024At least two years of experience of editorial and/or administrative work for a scholarly or creative literary journalExcellent written skills and an impeccable knowledge of grammar and punctuationProficiency in the use of Word, Excel, Canvas, and other relevant software and platformsDemonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a deadline-driven environmentDemonstrated teaching experience in English literature, editorial practice, and/or rhetoric and composition (if appointment involves teaching)

This is a benefitted staff position and is a full-time, 40 hour per week (1.0 FTE) position with teaching responsibilities included. With no teaching responsibilities, the position will be 32 hours per week (.80 FTE). Salary is dependent upon FTE.
