Managing Principal

Due to an internal move, HDR is excited to offer an opportunity for a Managing Principal to lead our Australian Architecture Business Group, overseeing both our Sydney and Melbourne studios.

We are seeking a dynamic leader to drive the continued growth and evolution of our practice, continuing to strengthen our commitment to exceptional design, transformative client relationships, regenerative design and sustainable growth in the region.

As Managing Principal, you will be responsible for the development and execution of both strategic and operational plans for Australian architecture practice. This will include managing annual budgets, monitoring performance, and ensuring resources are efficiently allocated to meet business objectives. Additionally, your leadership will be key in championing new business opportunities across sectors and business groups, working closely with the Australian Leadership Team to identify and pursue these opportunities.

We will count on you to:

Champion the Australian Architecture Business Group, promoting its vision and values both internally and externally, and advancing its reputation as a leader in the industry.Provide direct line management and leadership to senior staff, fostering a high-performance culture, and supporting the development and growth of the team.Proactively manage project and business risks, ensuring that potential challenges are identified and addressed.Drive continuous improvement in operational processes and procedures to enhance efficiency, quality and profitability.Champion diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, advocating for an inclusive working environment and fostering a culture of belonging within the practice.Serve as the nominated architect for the states in which we operate in Australia.

We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader for the role of Managing Principal, aligned with our global architecture business group. In the Australian context, this position will be recognised as the Area Business Group Manager, reflecting specific regional responsibilities for managing the operations, growth, and development of the architecture business within the Australian market.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced people leader to step into a pivotal role, collaborating with global and regional leadership to shape the future of HDR’s architecture practice. The position can be based in either Sydney or Melbourne, and your willingness to travel both domestically and internationally to connect with local and global colleagues and clients will be key.

About You

The ideal candidate will have a relevant tertiary qualification and professional registration as a Registered Architect, alongside a minimum of 15 years of experience in the architecture or built environment industry. This experience should include significant time in senior leadership roles, where you have demonstrated success in managing operations, driving profitability, and mentoring and developing senior leadership talent.

You will be able to demonstrate the following key criteria:

A proven understanding of financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and ensuring profitability across projects and operations.Strong experience leading cross-functional teams and fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.Experience in mentoring and developing senior leadership and management talent.Ability to manage complex business operations, including risk management, performance monitoring, and managing projects with construction values exceeding $100 million.In-depth knowledge of the architecture sector, including market economic trends, industry trends, challenges, and opportunities.Expertise in client relationship management, with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key clients, partners, and stakeholders.Design Leadership and Inspiration: Ability to inspire clients and team members, demonstrating a strong vision and leadership.Experience working within a multidisciplinary, matrixed environment - highly advantageous.Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally when required.
