Manufacturing Engineer II
Abbott is a global healthcare leader that helps people live more fully at all stages of life. Our portfolio of life-changing technologies spans the spectrum of healthcare, with leading businesses and products in diagnostics, medical devices, nutritionals and branded generic medicines. Our 114,000 colleagues serve people in more than 160 countries. **POSITION SUMMARY:** Performs complex activities in providing manufacturing engineering support for existing circulatory support products and the development/transfer into manufacturing new products in the primary area of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs). Develops technical solutions to complex technical and manufacturing electrical engineering problems. Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. May direct projects and activities of other Engineers and Technicians. **RESPONSIBILITIES:** **PROJECT MANAGEMENT:** Plans and conducts small- to medium-size assigned projects within engineering specialty requiring conventional types of plans, investigations, and/or equipment. Coordinates and monitors activities/projects. Review plans and monitor the status of implementation for those assigned to the project. Makes judgments regarding the quality of implementation within the discipline. Employs contingency plans to recover from schedule slippage and financial overruns when appropriate, e.g., tracks actual expenditures compared to projected cash flow for own project. Facilitates the definition of a project scope with clients. Estimates and coordinates resources needed (materials, budget, time, and people) to accomplish assigned individual tasks, e.g., coordinates work with technicians and associate engineers. Prepares contingency plans and budgets for assignments. Participates in economic analysis and feasibility studies related to project alternatives. Jointly responsible for achieving the project's financial targets in support of business objectives. **TECHNICAL/DESIGN:** Anticipates future directions. Benchmarks internally and externally. Recognizes changes in the environment and present resources as indicators of future problems and opportunities. Prepares for such eventualities, e.g., initiates a plan to acquire new engineering skills required by changes in technology. Independently executes the design of products/processes/equipment/systems/facilities by applying standard engineering theories, concepts, and techniques within the discipline. Independently investigates, conducts tests or experiments, gathers data, and performs preliminary analysis. Reports findings. Prepares and communicates recommendations and respective action plans. **PROBLEM SOLVING/INNOVATION:** Creates/modifies designs for intermediate problems. Designs/modifies more complex components/processes. Writes detailed design specifications, e.g., creates a new production flow diagram. modifies an existing design to improve a construction process. Predicts patterns/trends. Grasps complexities and sees relationships among data. Determines consequences and alternatives. Makes recommendations, e.g., develops process improvements for manufacturing. analyzes problems from multiple perspectives. Improves methods/designs/processes. Recognizes and implements good ideas/innovations/cost reductions. Consistently generates/adopts original solutions to problems and reduces them to practices, e.g., implements better methods to reduce component costs. Creatively applies others' design ideas. **ORGANIZATIONAL INTERFACE:** Mentors others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance. Interfaces primarily with internal company contacts. Communicates infrequently with inter-organizational and outside customer contacts on routine matters. Prepares written communication. Conveys information effectively through formal and informal documents with internal and external team members, designers, technicians, and other internal and external technical personnel to Abbott, using appropriate communications protocols, e.g., developing proposals and conducting reviews. Provides audience-targeted content. Prepares project summaries and design documentation. Obtains approval to proceed with proposed action plans. Establishes networks. Follows through on project goals. Contributes willingly and incorporates the ideas of others. Shares resources, knowledge, and accountability to benefit business objectives, e.g. participates in team meetings. Serves as a functional expert in design reviews. Buildings relationships. Initiates and cultivates open, honest relationships with colleagues, customers, contractors, and vendors by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of others' needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments, e.g., helping. Interacts effectively with stakeholders at appropriate levels of the organization. Resolves underlying problems. Identifies a full range of customer/client needs and proposes solutions. makes alterations in products or services to better meet (recognized or unrecognized) customer needs, e.g., partners with an outside vendor to provide a better deliverable. **COMPLIANCE:** Complies with all regulations and standards for quality, Environmental, Health, Safety, and Energy (EHS&E) Global Policies, Abbott Engineering Standards, and other governance areas as applicable. Ensures quality and effectiveness of assigned tasks. Awareness of the potential consequences (defects and failure modes) of design changes to established processes. Identifies areas of risk to compliance **ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:** Develop procedures and standards. Coordinates with technical support personnel to conduct prototype or experimental runs of products or processes. Directs the efforts of others, such as technicians and outside resources. - Performs tasks such as writing Requests for Capital Expenditures (RCEs), safety/quality checklists, scope documents, etc. Develops and executes validation protocols. Resolves problems, such as production process deviations, vendor deviations from specification, urgent out-of-stock replacements, and crises requiring fast, astute decisions with rapid implementation using technical training and experience. Provides training on **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:** + Requires a B.S. in Mechanical, Materials, or Manufacturing Engineering. Requires 5 to 7 years of engineering experience, including skills in new product introduction, process development, improvement, and validation related to manufacturing electro-mechanical devices. + Requires strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to interface with all departments. **ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:** + Experience with FDA design controls for medical devices (ISO/GMP) preferred. + Industry experience with medium to high-volume manufacturing is strongly preferred. + Experience with CAD design, SPC, DOE, CMM, Six Sigma concepts, and/or project management skills a plus. + Good organization and time utilization skills.
