Manufacturing Supervisor
MISSION / SUMMARY:
Provides leadership and supervision to production work teams on 3rd shift and serves as the link to plant management for the team. Facilitates team meetings, intervenes as necessary to keep the team’s goals and results consistent with company direction, and works with the team members to develop their full potential. The 3rd shift supervisor, in conjunction with the team, is responsible for safety, product quality, product quantity, equipment condition, and department housekeeping.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
Supervises and facilitates the day-to-day shift activities of the production floor. Utilizes knowledge and experience, providing training to team members. Responsible for their individual performance. Oversees aspects of scheduling, material handling issues and maintenance, as well as resolving production problems. Helps team achieve goals and has responsibility for personnel issues, including required discipline. Provides a communication network between direct reports and middle and upper management. Works with employees to maintain a safe work environment. Encourages and leads team members to work in a safe manner and to seek improvement in work practices for their benefit. Develops and implements safety procedures and supports plant in achieving departmental and plant safety goals. Ensures that the team maintains quality standards and quality checks are completed and documented in the system. Ensures that product quality, production efficiencies, and overall productivity meets or exceeds established standards, and is directly accountable for expenditures exceeding budgeted levels. Strives to be technically proficient on the machinery in the department. Assists the team in problem resolution. Participates in Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Actions (from customer complaints, SQF audits, validation, and verification activities) as required. Follows all procedures related to producing Safe Quality Foods (SQF). Reports any potentially unsafe SQF conditions or customer complaints to a person of authority to record and/or correct the situation. Other duties as assignedBACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:
Must have 5 or more years’ experience in a folding carton packaging industry or similar manufacturing environment or equivalent combination of education and experience. Supervisory/Management experience preferred Experience working with high volume printing and converting equipment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office SAP experience a plus. Continuous Improvement Agility - Improve Safety, Cost, Productivity, Quality & Morale Coachable - willingness to make changes daily as required
EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or equivalent experience in a converting facility is required. Experience and knowledge of roll stock cutting machines, printing presses, die cutting machines, and straight-line gluers is preferred. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles, successful track record in cost savings initiatives (Safety, Waste, Continuous Improvement) Trained or knowledge of SQF prerequisites including GMP, Food Defense, etc.
SCHEDULE DEMANDS:
General schedule is an 8+-hour M-F assignment on 3rd Shift (10:00 pm – 6:00 am), however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so. Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail. Must be willing to work weekend duty.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequent, bending, stooping, squatting, as well as frequent movement throughout the facility for extended periods of time up to 8+-hour Reading computer screen or other electronic devices. Use of various office, hand tools or electrical equipment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to airborne particles and times of increased heat and humidity. The noise level in the immediate work environment is normally quiet, however requires exposure to a noisy manufacturing environment. Standing occasionally and walking and sitting frequently, depending on changing job assignment, for extended periods. Awkward and/or repetitive movements. Ability to climb, twist neck and back, and finger frequently (34-66% of the time). Ability to balance, stoop, bend, squat, twist, handle, feel, reach above shoulder and at or below shoulder, reach over 18”, reach to the floor, kneel and drive occasionally (1-33% of the time). Lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally (1-33% of the time). Requires use of both feet on a frequent basis for walking, climbing stairs, and possibly ladders. Requires use of both hands for simple grasping (frequently) and pushing/pulling (occasionally) for purposes of going through production reports, holding a clipboard, and inspecting equipment and machinery. Ability to read, write, hear, see, speak and have agility on a continuous basis. PPE required: Steel-toed/safety footwear, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Cut resistant Safety Gloves, Hair Net, Beard Net.
