Responsibilities You will review technical work documents used for marine machinery repairs to determine accuracy and completeness. You will operate power equipment (e.g., portable milling machines, boring bars, portable valve refurbishing machines, drills) for the maintenance of shipboard machinery or components. You will determine materials or parts required to perform repairs on marine machinery equipment. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO PERFORM THE WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: 1) Making needed repairs by replacing, reworking, or refinishing worn or damaged parts and components; 2) Reassembling and installing machinery, equipment, and components on small boats; 3) Removing items for repair or overhaul; and 4) Cleaning and performing preventive maintenance tasks as required. Education Additional Information This position requires exposure to high noise levels. A 40-hour work week is typical for this position. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent Marine Machinery Mechanic frequently handles objects weighing up to 20 kilograms (45 pounds) and occasionally carries objects weighing 20 kilograms (45 pounds) and over considerable distances. They are required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bond, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time. Some work involves ascending and descending narrow vertical ladders or staging, often while carrying tools and equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent Marine Machinery Mechanic usually performs work inside and outside, exposing them to the prevailing weather conditions, noise, and intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces. Frequently, work is performed in cramped areas of craft with minimum light and ventilation, and in areas with high temperatures. They are constantly exposed to moving objects, elevations, and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. They are also exposed to the possibility of an electric shock when working on wet surfaces and of serious injury from slipping and falling while working on masts, in the dry dock, and from ladders and staging. Dirt, grease, dampness, and chemical fumes are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as safety shoes and glasses, gloves, and hard hats are used. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled.
