Responsibilities Stands a regular engine room watch aboard a diesel powered towboat. Performs repair and maintenance of engines, drive trains and mechanical components on a variety of floating and mobile equipment. Removes engines or power packs from the vessels. Completely disassembles engines; V-engine, L-engine, and opposed engine; and gas or multi-fuel determining the extent of repair and/or rebuild, i.e., grind valves, hone cylinders, and bearings. Diagnoses and repairs all types of failure in electrical systems (12 and 24 volts) using various devices and testing equipment. Repairs and replaces wiring; removes, tests, repairs and replaces defective assemblies and parts, i.e.; line switches relays, and etc.; repairs and adjusts controls, i.e., voltage control units, current controls, series switches, etc. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications This position is located with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, Operations Division, Physical Support Br, Nav Section, Motor Vessel Grugett, Memphis, TN 38103. Duty location is Ensley Engineering Yard. Work schedule: This position requires frequent mandatory overtime and weekend work, and occasional shift work. During towing season the work schedule is 12 hour shifts. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Machinery Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Completely disassembles engines, using various devices and testing equipment; Repairs and adjusts power and mechanical steering systems. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Physical Effort: Work is frequently performed in tiring or uncomfortable positions. There is frequent climbing, standing, stooping and lifting up to 50 pounds by individuals and of greater weights with assistance. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside. Subject to dangers of flammable fuels, exhaust fumes and gases, metal chipping and grinding, moving machinery, slippery decks, and hazards attending movement of floating plant. Education Additional Information Position may be filled as a Term Appointment NTE 5 years. Term appointments may be extended beyond of six (6) years, up to eight (8) years. With DoD approval, Term appointments may be extended beyond eight (8) years. Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position. Performs all duties aboard the M/V Grugett and any associated floating plant attached to the vessel, such as a crane barge. Will be assigned emergency duties as specified in the vessel Safety Plan. These duties may require the performance of fire fighting and/or rescuing of people endangered by fire or other emergency. This position is covered by the DOT rules and USACE ER 690-1-1218. May be subject to random alcohol and drug testing on an unannounced basis.
