Master Thesis Proposal - Absorption refrigeration system for green and efficient truckingBackground
Energy crises, rising fuel costs and ever-growing environmental concerns are main drivers for investigators to develop an alternative green technology to replace conventional refrigeration systems. The absorption refrigeration technique (ART) is a highly promising alternative that has attracted a lot of attention over the past years. By utilizing a refrigerant with a low global warming potential (GW) and being thermally driven by low-grade and clean energy sources, ART has a strong potential to offer energy efficient low-carbon refrigeration solution. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the technological feasibility of an absorption refrigeration system (ARS) to fulfill the needs for cabin climatization in commercial trucks. The assessments will consider the capability of ARS to provide simultaneous generation of heat and cold, including the possibility for cabin preconditioning during parking.
Who are we?
Thermal Management is a department within Volvo Group Trucks Technology that is responsible for developing optimized Vehicle Thermal Management Systems for all truck brands within the Volvo Group. As a master thesis student within the Thermal Management department, you will be a valued contributor to our continuous learning. You will be surrounded by a global and diverse team of highly skilled and engaged colleagues who will be interested in the progress of your work and eager to help and support you along the way. In addition, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with Volvo’s external partners and international universities.
What will you do?
The work will mostly employ a modeling and simulation approach and if the time frame allows the concept could also be tested in a physical setup. It comprises the following tasks:
Create simulation models of the absorption refrigeration system (ARS) Evaluate both dynamic and stationary performance of the ARS while considering different heat sources available in conventional and fuel cell tucks (e.g. waste heat) Carry out the analysis for component sizing and packaging Perform optimization of the ARS operating conditions to achieve maximum overall efficiency and performance
Expected outcomes
As outputs from the thesis work, we would like to have:
Suitable qualifications:
Final year student in Master program for Automotive, Physics, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or similar Knowledge in Thermodynamics and interest in vehicle thermal management systems Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and familiarity with 1D simulation tools, e.g. GT-Suite.
