The Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science, Marine Operations Department is seeking a Mate to assist the ship's Captain and crew including but not limited to: handling lines in preparation of docking and undocking of the ship at ports of call, maintaining cleanliness/readiness of the deck area, maintenance of the vessel's deck equipment and machinery and assist other divisions as assigned. The incumbent will stand watch and help ship's engineer as needed. 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION  
A U.S. Coast Guard licensed crew member in charge of vessel's deck department. The mate is responsible to the Captain for the safety and security of the ship. Responsibilities include the crew's welfare and training in areas such as safety, firefighting, search and rescue. Carries out orders as directed by the Captain and reports directly to the Captain. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
•    Oversees all maintenance of the vessel's deck equipment and machinery.
•    Oversees line handlers during vessel movements.
•    Operates cranes, winches, anchoring machinery, and other scientific instruments.
•    Oversees small boat maintenance and operates small boats when necessary. 
•    In charge of lading and unloading of all cargo and scientific gear. 
•    Responsible for the interior and exterior cleanliness of the vessel.
•    Stands navigational watches.
•    Participates in safety drills as directed by the vessel's Emergency Station Bill. 
•    In charge of vessel when the Captain is not on board or incapacitated to command the vessel.
•    Related duties as directed by the Captain.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 
•    General vessel navigation.
•    Ship Handling.
•    Advanced seamanship, marlinspike and rigging.
•    Supervisory skills.
•    Shipboard firefighting. 
•    Basic first aid. 
•    Computer skills ‐ ability to use email, standard office software, compose & format correspondence. 
•    Ability to handle multiple priorities, organize and plan daily tasks and projects. 
•    Possess customer service skills.
•    Ability to develop and maintain productive and cooperative working relationships.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS  
•    High school graduate is required.
•    Current/valid state driver’s license. 
•    Current/ valid passport. 
•    STCW. 

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
•    US Coast Guard license of 100 tons or greater.
•    Able Bodied Seaman. 
•    Unlimited Radar Observer. 
•    Fire Fighting. 
•    Basic Safety.
