Material Handler

Under general supervision, the Material Handler will perform a combination of tasks including load, unload, and move material and parts in and around the manufacturing facility.  Responsible for the accuracy of inventory and may oversee the receiving of inventory and make required transactions into various inventory control programs.

 

Essential Functions of the Job:

 

Fulfills work orders, requests for materials or other stock items and distributes items to production workers. Uses a scanner to track inventory and conduct inventory cycle counts as needed. Assembles orders from stock and places orders on pallets or shelves, or moves orders to packing station, shipping department or trailers. Reads production schedules, customer orders, and work orders, shipping orders or requisitions to identify items to be moved, gathered or distributed. Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands together in preparation for movement. Loads/unloads materials to or from pallets, trays, racks and shelves manually, by hoist or forklift. Marks materials with identifying information. Moves materials and items from receiving or production areas to storage or other designated areas by hand, hand truck or forklift. May load materials onto vehicles and install strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit. Sorts and places materials or items on racks, shelves or in bins according to predetermined locations. Collaborates with various internal departments for order and inventory accuracy. May be assigned additional responsibilities as necessary to support continuous improvement, and the manufacturing and distribution operations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

Knowledge and understanding of inventory management and distribution software. Knowledge of complex warehouse, shipping and receiving operations, including “put-away processes” and bin maintenance. Knowledge of basic math and computer data entry. Proficient use of computers, and ability to work efficiently in MS Office Suite, and JD Edwards (ERP). Able to read and interpret blueprints accurately. Be accountable to workload, deadlines, etc. Able to perform basic measurements using tape measure and other measuring devices. Able to operate a forklift and hand truck to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact locations. Effective communication skills to provide information to supervisors, leads, and co-workers in written form or in person. Able to wear the required personal protective equipment. Ability to become licensed to drive a forklift truck. Perform work in a safe and efficient manner. Able to work overtime and/or including weekends as production schedules dictate.

 

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED preferred. A minimum of three years of previous material handling experience in a production environment. A minimum of one year experience operating a forklift in a manufacturing environment.

Work performed in a non-climate-controlled metal manufacturing production environment, with frequent standing, twisting, bending, stooping, and climbing in and around metal fabricated parts.  Frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of 40 pounds.  Requires sufficient manual dexterity and visual acuity to identify required parts and operate production equipment (i.e. forklift, hand truck, etc.).
