Material & Process Engineer
Overview Spirit AeroSystems designs and builds aerostructures for both commercial and defense customers. Responsibilities Key Accountabilities: This is an intermediate or experienced position. Work under general supervision and/or independently with no instructions for routine work and under general supervision for special assignments. Creatively use analytical instruments to determine unknown materials and diagnose material issues. Perform normal maintenance of analytical instruments to ensure reliable functionality. Material sample extraction and preparation. Thorough record keeping of experimental procedures and results. Compile reports to present findings and conclusions to relevant stakeholders. Develop test plans, coordinate testing, test reports for qualification activities and author material and process specifications for Spirit AeroSystems. Support project management activities including resources/budget planning, deliverables, project schedules, presentation to leadership etc. Independently determine & develop approaches to solutions and provide technical support for projects as required. Qualifications Required Qualifications: 5-8 years of related industry experience with a Bachelor of Science degree, or 3-6 years with a Master of Science degree, or 0-3 years with a PhD or JD. Degree must be in Engineering (Chemistry, Materials, Chemical, or a related field) from an ABET-accredited engineering program Experience in chemical processing such as anodizing (metal finishing), conversion coating, cleaning, chemical milling, plating, and sealing Strong analytical skills using instruments like FT-IR, DMA, DSC, TGA, and GC-MS Ability to utilize analytical instruments beyond standard ASTM procedures for material analysis In-depth knowledge of analytical instrument capabilities and constraints Capability to maintain and perform regular maintenance on analytical instruments to uphold their functionality Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team Preferred Skills: Proficiency in Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Technical knowledge to support NADCAP and customer audits in chemical processing Skills in analytical data processing and certification methods like Root Cause Corrective Action, Six Sigma, Shainin Red-X, Robust Design, and/or Design for Six Sigma.
