Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space System Division has an opening for a Materials and Process Engineer - Printed Wiring Board (PWB) (Level 5 or Level 6), to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Manhattan Beach, California.

The selected candidate will be part of the Macro-electronics Materials and Processes Engineering Section supporting various space systems

Essential Functions:

Candidates must have in-depth knowledge of materials and processes (M&P) used in the design and fabrication of High-Reliability Printed Wiring/Circuit Boards (PWB/PCB) for space applications.  Additionally, candidates must possess a high degree of understanding of the industry specifications used for fabrication of rigid and flex PWBs including IPC-6011, IPC-6012, IPC-6013, IPC-6018, and IPC-2221 among others.  Prior experience and in-depth understanding of PWB fabrication processes including Design for Manufacturing (DFM), CAM panel layout, lamination, plating, mechanical and laser drilling, etching, electrical testing, workmanship inspection and acceptance testing. Collaborate with internal and external groups to identify PWB material selections, evaluate new designs for producibility, review and approve fabrication drawings and test procedures, and oversee qualification of new PWB designs and technologies. Develop microvia design parameters and reliability screening methods. Identify and qualify new surface finishes for implementation on flight (space) hardware. Identify, survey and qualify new PWB suppliers.  Active participation in internal design reviews, new PWB and coupon design development, failure analysis, trade studies and qualification review boards in support of PWB related issues. Take ownership of tasks, oversee delegated tasks, mentor junior engineers, check results for accuracy and document the results. Formulate detailed instructions/test plans and be the lead in their execution with a proven understanding of data analysis methodologies and knowledge of design and manufacturing processes. Collaborate closely with NG PWB designers, external PWB suppliers, procurement teams, internal and external manufacturing, and quality engineers as well as functional management.

Basic Qualifications (Level 5):

Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) plus 14 years of engineering experience OR Master of Science in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline plus 12 years of engineering experience.

High knowledge of M&P used in the design and fabrication of PWBs (Rigid, RF and Flex) for space applications and related IPC specifications.

High ​Knowledge of PWB and coupon design, fabrication and PWB vendor oversight.

Proven leadership experience on a project and/or team.

Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of PWBs, materials or processes.

Ability to obtain and DoD Top Secret Clearance or SCI Access.

Basic Qualifications (Level 6):

Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) plus 20 years of engineering experience OR Master of Science in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline plus 18 years of engineering experience.

High knowledge of M&P used in the design and fabrication of PWBs (Rigid, RF and Flex) for space applications and related IPC specifications.

High ​Knowledge of PWB and coupon design, fabrication and PWB vendor oversight.

Proven leadership experience on a project and/or team.

Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of PWBs, materials or processes.

Ability to obtain and DoD Top Secret Clearance or SCI Access.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Master's degree in STEM

Knowledge of electronics design and Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) processes is a plus.

Direct experience with fabrication of high-reliability and complex PWB designs.

Salary Range: $155,500.00 - $233,300.00Salary Range 2: $171,000.00 - $256,400.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
