Job Title: Materials Science Engineer
Job Description

The Materials Science Engineer researches, designs, and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems, and subsystems. They apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic, and composite material and processing specifications, as well as fabrication and assembly processes. The role includes developing, analyzing, and applying material properties and design allowables, processing processes, and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems, and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. The engineer may also review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.

ResponsibilitiesResearch, design, and develop materials and their related fabrication and application processes.Optimize materials for use in engineering design of structures, systems, and subsystems.Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop material and processing specifications.Develop, analyze, and apply material properties and design allowables.Perform failure analysis of components, systems, and subsystems.Predict material life and define requirement specifications.Review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.Use NASA MAPT database and PMAP Rev C for materials characterization, specification, and validation.Verify compliance with systems level requirements.Document lessons learned within submittals.Essential Skills10 years of materials science engineering experience with regulatory oversight from NASA, DoD, MDA, FAA, Army, or Air Force programs.5 years of experience researching systems level requirements and writing compliance verification.5 years of experience with PMAP Parts Materials and Processes requirements processes for manufacture, production, and/or assembly.Experience with metallurgy, materials science, composite materials, and materials engineering.Knowledge of flammability properties.Additional Skills & QualificationsBS in Materials Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years of work experience.Masters or PhD in Materials Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years of work experience.Experience with aeronautical/aerospace primes such as Boeing, G.E., Honeywell, etc., and familiarity with Military, AMS, and ASTM specifications.3+ years of experience in materials characterization and materials characterization testing.3+ years of experience in materials process specification.3+ years of experience in flammability and basic characterization of mechanical and physical properties, and testing to validate properties.Work Environment

The work environment includes both office and testing laboratory settings. This role is within the Parts Materials and Processes team that supports multiple programs and missions related to space launch, missile defense, and space exploration.
