A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MEAT CUTTER
As a Safeway Meat Cutter, you will be on the cutting edge with our beef, poultry, and other meat products, and you
must be willing to carve out time to engage our customers in friendly conversations about our products. To be
successful in this position, you need to be passionate about meats and the success of the department. We invite you

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Provide high-quality customer service in accordance with Safeway’s customer service standards and
policies and procedures.
• Comply with established Weight and Measures, health and sanitation and safety policies, procedures
and guidelines. Use knives and operate (power) saws, grinders and other meat processing machinery to
cut, trim and prepare meat products, minimizing waste wherever possible.
• Clean/sanitize all equipment and area in a safe and proper manner according to federal, state and local
regulations and employer policy.
• Weigh, package and label meat and poultry items for display.
• Promote sales within department.
• Inspect displayed products for expired dates and remove when necessary.
• Follow the established division markdown policy.
• Take special orders from customers and provide special cuts.
• Maintain area and conduct business in accordance with federal, state and local laws and regulations and
employer policy.
• Adhere to uniform and grooming policy as defined within company policy.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
The following describes the general qualifications and physical, sensory and mental abilities normally associated with
performing the essential job functions of this position:**
• Ability to operate various hand tools, knives and power equipment such as cubing machine, grinder and (power)
saws
• Knowledge of and ability to prepare different cuts of meat
• Ability to oversee Meat Wrappers in the absence of the Meat Manager
• Ability to be subject to environmental exposure to extreme temperatures (coolers, freezer for short periods of
time)
• Ability to operate wrapping machine and hand wrap product when necessary
• Excellent customer service skills
• Ability to understand and follow instructions, and ability to read, retain and comprehend guidelines, policies and
procedures applicable to the position
• Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work independently as well as within a large team
• Self-motivated and driven to increase knowledge of Safeway products and share that knowledge with Safeway
customers
• Ability to provide regular and predictable attendance. (Safeway employees may be scheduled to work early
mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, and schedules may vary on a weekly basis)
• Ability to comply with workplace conduct standards
