Job Summary
Salary to commensurate with qualifications
The Sheriff’s Office provides public safety at all times and therefore every position is deemed essential. All positions are in-person and not eligible for remote work. Every position is also subject to recall based on the needs of the Office to keep the community safe.
This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 4:00pm or 7:30am - 4:30pm , on call rotation, subject to change.
Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.
Performs mechanical and electrical repairs on Sheriff's Office fleet vehicles including routine maintenance and upfitting new vehicles to put into service.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
+ Performs routine maintenance on fleet vehicles as recommended by manufacturers maintenance schedules and fleet schedules, including service and replacement of tires, automatic transmissions, brakes, oil, and oil filters. Checks and maintains all fluid levels, lights/police lighting, belts, hoses, water pumps, heater cores, timing belts, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, steering linkage components shocks/struts and drive axle repair/replacement. Completes work orders for all services performed.
+ Diagnoses and repairs problems with vehicles to include electrical ODB II, C.A.N. system codes, mechanical, fuel, emissions, suspension repairs, routers and MDC repairs.
+ Performs road tests on vehicles to ensure safety and roadworthiness after completion of repairs.
+ Prepares new vehicles for service, including checking all mechanical, electrical, and emission systems and installation of police equipment (radios, emergency equipment, and lighting devices, sirens, vehicle partitions, radars, in-car cameras, shot gun/rifle mounts, routers and mobile computer systems).
+ Assists in monitoring and maintaining inventory of all parts required for fleet maintenance and repair.
+ Cleans shop area, tools, and equipment. Repairs shop equipment as required.
+ Supervises and trains inmate trustee in shop clean-up and car-washing.
+ Completes work orders for all services performed using the Fleet Management software.
+ Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Must be honest, truthful, trustworthy, and possess a high degree of personal integrity.
+ Must utilize personal general mechanics tools in carrying out duties.
+ Must possess basic computer skills, basic data entry, and computer navigation skills.
+ Must be technically proficient in the diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, and safety inspection of light, attachments, and auxiliary equipment.
+ Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
+ Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, County staff, and vendors.
+ Ability to estimate and prioritize repairs, manage multiple tasks, and be adaptable in a constantly changing environment.
+ Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment including telephone, computer, printer, copier, and calculator. Ability to use databases and Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, and Outlook.
+ Ability to work independently and detail-oriented.
+ Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education and Experience:
+ High school diploma or equivalent education.
+ Any equivalent combination of related education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
Preferred Education and Experience:
+ Graduate of automotive trade school.
+ Minimum three years of experience in general automobile maintenance and repair.
Licenses/Certificates:
+ Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
+ A.S.E. Certifications preferred.
+ Must possess or be able to pass the Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recycling Recharging Mobile Air Conditioning test within six months of employment, to be certified in air conditioning repair.
+ Must obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Compliance within six months of employment.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
+ Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, truth verification examination, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.
Work Conditions
Duties are primarily performed in an office, garage, and outdoor environment. Duties may require lifting, bending, and climbing. May be required to work with hazardous materials, such as antifreeze, lubricants, solvents, corrosives, fuels, and vapors. Duties may be performed in hazardous situations, including moving vehicles/equipment, or recovering vehicles/equipment in adverse weather conditions. Works with potentially dangerous equipment and tools. In the automotive shop environment there may be exposure to noise, fumes, and chemicals. Some off-site work necessary for vehicle repair. Position is subject to be on-call nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs. May lift and maneuver 50 pounds from the standing, sitting, and lying position. May work for long periods of time with arms extended outward from the body and/or overhead; must climb ladders and stairs and possess hand dexterity to operate various equipment control mechanisms. Position is on-call with an alternating schedule.
