The Measurement Science Discipline at RTRC invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of research engineer on the Mechanical Behavior Team specializing in mechanical behavior test methods focused on novel material testing development.

The Mechanical Behavior Team is a primary resource within RTX to support technology development and pursue corrective actions for highly challenging technical problems in the areas of materials and processes spanning the entire product portfolio of the RTX business units. 

What You Will Do:

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate eager to apply and extend the state of the art in material behavior test methods. The candidate will have a strong knowledge of materials testing applications, material properties and data analysis.  Significant hands-on experience with any material testing equipment as well as data acquisition and analysis are critical skill sets in meeting the technical mission of the RTRC Measurement Science Team. The successful candidate will execute program activities requiring the following capabilities:

Utilizing standardized test methods (tension, compression, torsion, fatigue) for all types of materials

Creating non-standardized (novel) test methods for specific testing requirements

Designing and measuring material and component performance with proper instruments

Analyzing collected data, annotating and reporting results

Qualifications You Must Have:

A PhD in Aerospace, Biomedical, Mechanical or Materials Science Engineering or related field, or an MS degree with a minimum of 3 years’ experience preferred

Experience with test methods to assess the mechanical properties of various material systems such as metallics, composites and/or ceramics

High degree of enthusiasm for technology and an ability to learn quickly staying abreast of cutting-edge technology, industry leading techniques and other skill sets

Experience communicating with all levels of management, business development, researchers and/or clients

U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Qualifications We Prefer:

Experience with writing proposals for government-funded research, record of grants

Experience managing projects with emphasis on meeting scheduling and financial constraints as well as coordinating and aligning an interdisciplinary team.

Requires advanced knowledge of work area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. May have practical knowledge of project management. Practical to substantial knowledge of RTX projects, programs or systems with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.

Typically requires:

A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience

Engineering/Other Technical Positions:

Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
