Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer

Salary/Grade: Up to £40,000 (depending on experience)

Location: Larne

Contributory pension scheme - Caterpillar will double the employee's contribution up to 6%

The opportunity

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Global Solutions Engineering Group at Caterpillar (N.I.) situated at Larne. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role within the Caterpillar Electric Power engineering team.

The Global Solutions Engineering Group is responsible for the development of design to order customer specific products. This includes new product development, technical support for operations, processing of engineering changes, investigation & resolution of product quality issues. This role provides a great opportunity for an Engineer to develop their abilities within an experienced team working on projects for various export markets.

As the Mechanical Design Engineer, you will primarily carry out the concept and design of mechanical engineering projects through to production, and ensure the electric power products provide superior performance, best cost, durability, quality, and serviceability for our customers. For the right candidate, this role will include opportunities for you to be the lead engineer on smaller electric power projects.

What you will do:

Research new materials and competitive products.

Organise, coordinate, and execute the building, testing, and analysis of prototypes for electric power products.

Assist supply specialists and buyers with supplier development and supplier performance.

Oversee the efforts of drafting and testing specialists.

Develop and document functional requirements and translate into detail design documents.

Participate in buy-build analysis for product components.

Participate in and support proposal preparation, cost estimates, and technical reports for electric power products.

What you have:

Product Design and Development - Level Working Knowledge:

Experience designing fabricated structures and/or electric power packaged products.

Previous experience of working in a product design/development environment

Builds three-dimensional models with basic materials.

Evaluates alternative means of production being considered for use.

Assists in building a complex prototype of products.

Technical Excellence - Level Working Knowledge:

Have sound knowledge of fabricated structures and/or electric power packaged products.

Provides effective technical solutions to routine functional challenges via sound technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.

Effectively performs the technical job aspects, continuously building knowledge and keeping up-to-date on technical and procedural job components.

Helps others solve technical or procedural problems or issues.

Product Design (Manufacturing) - Level Extensive Experience:

Develops improvement plans for senior management and evaluates the outcome of the design against the functionality.

Monitors the processes and procedures of a complex product design to ensure functional requirements are met.

Computer-Aided Design & Engineering - Level Extensive Experience:

Working with Creo or similar 3D Modelling Software in a previous role.

Ability to create and interpret engineering drawings in accordance with recognised standards.

Managing Multiple Priorities - Level Working Knowledge:

Responds to day-to-day operational priorities while still making progress on project work.

Performs at least 2-3 concurrent activities without reducing productivity.

Analytical Thinking - Level Extensive Experience:

Identifies many possible causes for a problem based on prior experience and current research.

Quantifies the costs, benefits, risks and chances for success before recommending a course of action.

Approaches a complex problem by breaking it down into its component parts.

Effective Communications - Level Working Knowledge:

Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.

Additional information

Some travel may be necessary but no more than 5% of the time.
