Mechanical Engineer – Mobile Robot (All Levels)

What we need 

Symbotic is seeking an Advanced Mechanical Engineer to join our Mobile Robot Engineering team within our Core Hardware Engineering org.  You will be responsible for working on the creation, modification and improvements of robotic equipment used in warehouse automation in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team. You will work as a member of the team in the conceptualization, design, analysis, fabrication and testing of Symbotic's automated material handling equipment.

The Mechanical Engineering team, as part of the larger Hardware Engineering group, is at the forefront of designing and developing state-of-the-art mechanical solutions for industrial automation. We focus on the creation of large-scale capital equipment, integrating advanced robotic systems and mechanical structures tailored for robust industrial applications. Our engineers, guided by a seasoned leadership, are deeply involved in the entire lifecycle of product development—from conceptualization to deployment—ensuring that our innovative designs meet practical, real-world needs. We prioritize cross-functional collaboration, continuously refine our engineering processes, and uphold high standards in mechanical design to align with the strategic goals of the company and the evolving demands of the market.  

 

What you’ll do 

Design 3D components and subsystems for mobile robots such as drivetrain, power, vision, and case handling.  

Provide technical support to the production of projects for which he is responsible.  

Support issue resolution of fielded robots by identifying root causes and engineering solutions.  Asist project managers or other designers as required.   

Visit customers to retrieve data.   

Prepare purchase requisitions for equipment or special components.   

Search for products and components, contact suppliers.   

Assist in the commissioning of equipment and participate in fabrication & assembly tasks.   

Participate in the elaboration of maintenance & operations manuals.   

With little supervision, elaborates, defines and plans work from relatively clear objectives.  

Guides colleagues in their designing of parts, mechanisms, weldments, and industrial structures   

Elaborates and documents test procedures for prototype validation.  

Helps supervise the work of others and ensure the respect of department standards.   

Plays a key role in improvement initiatives with guidance from experts.  

Validate critical mechanical components.   

Contact potentially critical suppliers for specifications, cost, and availability.   

Oversee design reviews and escalate to experts when required.   

Identify and migrate the broader implications of design decisions.   

Ensure a homogenous understanding of design intent across disciplines (electrical, controls, robotics, and vision).  

Perform tolerance analysis on complex mechanical assemblies, and create mechanical drawings  

Create and manage Bill of Materials (BOMs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) in PLM  

Assist in assembling prototypes, testing, troubleshooting and implementing design changes   

Perform all other related tasks.    

Travel 25%-50% as required to customer sites.   

 

What you’ll need 

BS in Mechanical Engineering discipline or any other equivalent experience.   

5+ years of work experience in a hands-on Mechanical engineering or design role   

Pertinent experience in the robotics industry or other relevant field.   

Experience in designing parts for a variety of manufacturing processes: machining, casting, sheet metal, plastics, fabricated assemblies, etc.  

Proficiency in creating dimensional drawings per ANSI Y14.5 standards  

Experience with automotive, drivetrain, or other mobile robots is a plus  

Knowledge of SolidWorks. AutoCAD, other CAD software and FEA are assets.   

PLM experience a plus.  

Versed in design and drafting standards.  

Understanding of fabrication processes (turning, milling, welding, etc.).  

Knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Work, Outlook).  

Autonomy and ability to manage priorities.   

Availability to travel outside of the metropolitan area and abroad.  

Ability to resolve and analyze problems.  

Customer centered approach.   

Team player skills, with discipline and concerned for quality.   

Flexibility to work under pressure and in an environment where priorities change.  

  

Our Environment 

Up to 25% - 50% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations. 

The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed bi-weekly. 

The base range for this position in Bay Area, California is $100,000 - $210,000; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Bonus and equity may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits based on the position offered.
