This job is for a Dams, Levees, Civil Works (DLCW) Mechanical Engineer in the San Diego office who will be a part of the Water Resources Management group sitting in the DLCW business class. This role will focus on mechanical systems related to fisheries, dams, flood protection, irrigation, and water supply infrastructure. Mechanical systems at the aforementioned infrastructure can include pumps, process piping, large diameter piping, heavy machine design, hoists, trolleys, tainter gates, adjustable weir gates, low-level outlets and their associated valving, sealing systems, hydraulic cylinders and their hydraulic power units, mechanical screws, and other related features.

Primary Responsibilities

In the role of the Dams, Levees, Civil Works (DLCW) Mechanical Engineer , we'll count on you to:

Develop mechanical design calculations that follow industry standardsDevelop and backcheck plan sheets and detail drawingsDevelop technical specificationsDevelop preliminary construction cost estimates and support cost estimators for larger projectsTechnical writing for reports / technical memorandumsPrepare presentations (design, alternatives analysis, etc.)Coordinating cross-discipline (e.g., with electrical, structural, and civil) on a multidisciplinary project teamPerform mechanical/general field inspections/site visitsConstruction submittal reviews (e.g., shop drawings, OM manuals)Conduct analyses to develop design options or recommendationsPerform routine engineering assignments requiring the application of standard techniques and proceduresDevelop 3D models for visual communications and small project drawing developmentComplete projects with clear, specified objectives and limited variablesWork independently on projects of any size as task lead / supporting staffBe a task/discipline leadBe an Engineer Of Record (EOR) on small to mid-sized projects that align with your experienceTeach/mentor younger staff, and delegate work to younger staff (EIT’s)Communicate needs to the project teamDeliver scoped work on time and within a given budgetAssist in developing scope and fees for tasksBe committed to HDR’s quality culture and following Quality Management Systems in placeBe committed to HDR’s safety culture (Drive To Zero) and follow safetyAbility to learn from and assist senior engineers on projectsAsk questionsGive direction to clerical and technical personnel as neededBe respectful of othersPreferred QualificationsMinimum 3 years of previous experience with mechanical systems for civil works projects, water resource projects, or moveable bridges – Focus on dam infrastructure.Experience with large gatesExperience with specialty hinges (trunnion, pintle, gudgeon)Experience with machine design and operating systemsAbility to obtain a CA PE licenseProficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)Proficiency in 2D AutoCADProficiency in 3D modeling (Autodesk Inventor is a plus)Willing to take the initiative, which includes asking clarifying questionsMust be able to respectfully and effectively communicate with a wide range of people – both internal and external to HDRWillingness to learn from others, both in person and virtuallyMust be ok with domestic travel. Up to 15% of the timeAn attitude and commitment to being an active participant in our employee-owned culturePE license in multiple states is a plusExperience with large valves and associated piping is a plusExperience with construction servicesMembership or involvement in professional organizations (ie, ASME)Ability to read and interpret technical drawing setsFamiliarity with industry design codes/guidelines (e.g., USACE EM’s, USBR Design Standards, CMAA, etc.)Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical EngineeringPrevious experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildingsProfessional Engineer (PE) license Experience in commercial or institutional facilitiesComputer experience using MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, manufacturer selection softwarePrevious experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firmAn attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
