Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
This position will serve as a Mechanical Engineer in the Wind Engineering section at Corning’s Concord, NC facility. The main responsibility is to ensure that complex fiber winding processes meet production requirements in terms of safety, quality, reliability, and output. The candidate will monitor daily process attributes and initiate troubleshooting responses as needed. The candidate will seek process improvement opportunities and implement solutions under proper change management protocols. They will be expected to support and lead continuous improvement activities and cost reduction initiatives. An ideal candidate will strive to fundamental process understanding and lowest cost producer objectives. This position will work closely with other members of the Engineering and Operations departments to successfully meet plant output objectives.
Key Responsibilities Provide high quality process support for a fast-paced 24 x 7 manufacturing environment Demonstrate strong equipment and process troubleshooting skills Experience with electro-mechanical motion control systems and components: PLC structured text, servo motors/drives, linear actuators, sensors Adhere to site and corporate safety procedures: Lock-Out Tag-Out and authorized work permission Track daily production and quality metrics, planning reactionary measures as needed Work closely with support teams to understand and improve equipment capability Strong communication and presentation skills Creative/innovative problem solving Ability to participate or lead process improvement teams Provide trend analysis of key metrics and implement response plans
Hours, Schedule & Flex-time: Standard 5-day work week, 40-45 hours/week. This position requires off-hours coverage for nights and weekends on a rotating basis with co-workers.
Experiences/Education - Required Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or Mechanical Engineering Technology degree 3+ years of related technical work experience in a manufacturing/production environment Experiences/Education - Desired Self-starter, able to exceed expectations with a minimal amount of supervision Solid modeling experience with Autodesk inventor, SolidWorks, or similar design software Ability to generate and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings Strong problem-solving skills and ability to reach root cause mechanisms Working knowledge of data analysis techniques using Microsoft Excel and Access Experience with statistical packages such as JMP, Minitab, and Power BI Experience with Beckhoff (preferred), Allen Bradley, or similar PLC software Experience with mechanical prototyping and process development

The range for this position is $78,902.00 - $108,490.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
