The mechanical engineer will play a crucial role within the Engineering Department, focusing on the ongoing development and maintenance of the plant's assets and operations. This role involves improving and maintaining existing assets, executing the capital investment plan, and enhancing production and quality through equipment and process analysis. The position requires strong problem-solving skills, design work, data analysis, and project management capabilities.
Responsibilities
+ Perform mechanical design work, including drawings and calculations related to asset repair or improvement and capital project investments.
+ Troubleshoot mechanical and hydraulic systems to restore equipment operation as needed.
+ Conduct technical calculations and analyses to enhance operational processes.
+ Manage projects involving both internal and external resources to ensure timely and successful completion.
+ Develop technical standards and process documentation through effective technical writing.
+ Ensure adherence to safety procedures and rules, driving a culture of safety among employees.
+ Support the maintenance team with high-end troubleshooting, particularly with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
+ Reverse engineer aged capital assets that are no longer supported by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
+ Execute the capital plan, including researching new equipment, presenting proposals, managing vendor communications, and monitoring project budgets.
+ Continuously improve assets through data acquisition, layout recommendations, and equipment speed and quality enhancements.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
+ Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering.
+ Proficiency in SolidWorks.
+ Strong mechanical design skills, including the ability to create detailed drawings and perform technical calculations.
+ Experience in troubleshooting mechanical and hydraulic systems.
+ Project management experience, including overseeing internal and external resources.
+ Excellent technical writing skills for standards and process documentation.
+ Commitment to safety and the ability to enforce safety procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Stable work history with continuity in resume.
+ GPA above 3.0.
+ Technically oriented hobbies such as car maintenance or 3D printing.
+ Willingness to work in a hot, dusty environment and get hands dirty.
Work Environment
The flagship plant is located in Chicago and operates like a large job shop, handling projects from a wide variety of customers with different requirements and products. The work environment can be hot and dusty, requiring hands-on involvement. The plant focuses on open die steel forging, heat treating, and rough machining, servicing industries such as automotive and oil and gas.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $120000.00
The mechanical engineer is a technical role within the Engineering Department which is responsible for the ongoing development of the plant’s assets and operation. The department has three key objectives, improve and maintain operations of existing asset base, execute the capital investment plan, and improve production/quality results through equipment and process analysis. The mechanical engineer will deploy foundational abilities such as problem solving, design work, data analysis, and project management in the pursuit of the team goals.
