HDR has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer in the Movable Bridge group, based out of our Newark, NJ office.

Description

The primary responsibility of the Mechanical Engineer is to provide engineering support and production on mechanical system design and rehabilitation projects for the Movable Bridge Group. HDR’s Movable Bridge program has evolved into an international practice that includes design of mechanical systems not only for movable bridges but also for other large machinery structures such as locks and dams, cranes, tunnels, and industrial handling equipment.

The Mechanical Engineer will be expected to perform mechanical assessments, design heavy machinery components, draft design plans, and complete cost estimates and specifications for mechanical engineering projects. The position offers the opportunity to work independently on small projects and with other licensed Professional Engineers on larger projects. Standard machine design techniques will be used during everyday tasks and design of custom solutions will be required for unique systems.

The Mechanical Engineer will be expected to travel and field work around 10% of the time to assess mechanical systems throughout the US.

In the role of Mechanical Engineer, we'll count on you to:Coordinate the work of the mechanical design team through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a projectEstablish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code complianceCoordinate workload to complete the document on scheduleConduct work sessions at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplinesReview mechanical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplinesWrite and edit mechanical specifications, selects equipment, mechanical systems and devicesCoordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documentsProvide construction contract administration as neededConduct QA/QC on the work of other Mechanical Project Engineers, Mechanical Project Coordinators or Mechanical CAD Technicians as neededPerform other duties as neededPreferred Qualifications

2 years’ experience in design of heavy machinery for Movable Bridges or Heavy Movable Structures.

Preference Given to local candidates

A minimum of 4 years in mechanical engineering designRequired Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Previous experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings Professional Engineer (PE) license Experience in commercial or institutional facilities Computer experience using MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, manufacturer selection software Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firmAn attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
