Mechanical Engineer
Summary You will serve as a Mechanical Engineer within Engineering Services. Responsibilities Performs a mixture of basic routine (but progressively more difficult) assignments under the close direction of the manager or more experienced engineer. assists other employees in the resolution of engineering related issues and acts as an individual contributor and/or member of a team. Applies a basic knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, theories, and concepts applicable to the design, installation, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and acquisition of systems required for establishing and maintaining safe, efficient, productive, and cost-effective operation of the NAS. Typical assignments may include project management, design work, field inspections, collection and analysis of data, performing trend analysis, engineering testing, and determining manufacturing sources and material shortages analysis to mitigate equipment obsolescence. Coordinates with the manager or more experienced engineer to plan time and use assigned resources to accomplish assignment. Provides support and assistance to the agency in researching engineering compromise and agreements with engineers of other organizations and contractors. Plans, coordinates and accomplishes investigations requiring basic knowledge with mechanical analysis methods, and related engineering parameters used in the maintenance and support of numerous NAS systems. The nature of assignments requires ability to analyze, formulate approaches, and participate in the implementation of appropriate corrective actions in a timely manner. Performs technical data review on items such as technical manuals, handbooks, manufacturer's instruction books, design/fabrication drawings, special test equipment, and other technical materials pertaining to equipment repair. applies knowledge in the review of logistics related documentation including NAS change proposals, provisioning technical documentation, logistics management information, contractual documentation, and service order agreements. In consultation with manager or senior staff member, prepares comments and recommends revisions for inclusion in final drafts of these documents. Established policies/procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments with little or no room for discretion. regularly refers problems and work issues to the manager or more experienced engineer when existing guidelines are not available. Work is reviewed frequently during assignments and at completion for all aspects of quality. Requirements Conditions of Employment We are not accepting applications from noncitizens. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must have a degree in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; OR (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced that first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics OR A combination of education and experience that furnished: (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, AND (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, candidates must also meet the Specialized Experience requirements. To qualify for this position at the G band, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the F band (FG/GS-5/7/9). Specialized experience includes experience providing assistance in researching engineering compromises and agreements.
