Mechanical Engineer I – Rapid Prototyping
Amentum
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer I, specializing in rapid prototyping to support the development of underwater launch systems for DoD applications. This role will involve designing, fabricating, and testing prototype components for launch test vehicles, and payload deployment systems. The candidate must have a strong background in mechanical design, advanced manufacturing, and hands-on prototyping techniques such as 3D printing, CNC machining, and high-pressure system development.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Assist in designing and developing mechanical components deployment systems.
+ Use CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, or similar) to create detailed models, assemblies, and technical drawings.
+ Operate 3D printers, CNC machines, and other rapid prototyping equipment to fabricate and refine designs.
+ Conduct structural, thermal, and fluid dynamics analysis to ensure reliability in high-pressure underwater environments.
+ Work within a classified environment, adhering to all security and clearance requirements.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems engineers, electrical engineers, and naval defense contractors.
+ Support integration of sealing mechanisms, buoyancy control, and launch dynamics in underwater deployment systems.
+ Document engineering processes, testing results, and prototype iterations for reporting and compliance.
Qualifications & Skills:
+ Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
+ Experience: 0-2 years of experience in mechanical design, prototyping, or defense-related engineering.
+ Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance. Please note that US Citizenship is required to obtain a Secret clearance.
+ Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD, or similar) for complex mechanical designs.
+ Hands-on experience with 3D printing (SLA, FDM, SLS), CNC machining, and precision manufacturing.
+ Knowledge of high-pressure vessels, underwater materials, and corrosion-resistant coatings.
+ Familiarity with fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics, and pressure containment for submerged environments.
+ Ability to work within a high-security, classified environment on DoD-sensitive projects.
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
+ Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Internship or project experience with DoD contractors.
+ Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for underwater applications.
+ Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and tolerance stack-up analysis.
+ Background in hydraulic and pneumatic systems for underwater launch.
+ Knowledge of electromechanical integration in underwater vehicles and deployment systems.
+ Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or C++ for automation and simulation.
