Mechanical Engineer III (P-4283)

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer III to join our Instrument Lifecycle Management Team. This role involves leading and conducting sustaining engineering projects on our instrumentation, including activities focused on continuous improvement and investigations of quality events related to optics, motion controls/components, and more.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in complex capital equipment with automation and optical components. The candidate will bring experience in design and process development for instruments or capital equipment, using their technical expertise and prioritization skills to lead these initiatives. Strong communication skills are essential for ensuring effective collaboration with team members.

This role requires engagement with cross-functional teams, encompassing diverse perspectives and expertise. The successful candidate will quickly establish themselves as a collaborative partner, able to navigate ambiguity and work effectively with incomplete information.

Over time, the Mechanical Engineer III’s deepening understanding of our systems will help inform future projects and product development efforts.

What you will be doing:

Manage engineering projects in collaboration with product management to coordinate continuous improvement activities for released instruments. Work with contract manufacturers and internal instrument manufacturing teams to drive root cause investigations, implement corrective actions, monitor and trend RMAs, and enhance manufacturing processes. Collaborate with the 10x service organization to analyze field data and implement long-term corrective actions for instruments in the field. Identify and implement changes to improve products and reduce costs by leveraging knowledge of assembly methods, quality control standards, fabrication processes, tooling, production equipment, product design, and materials. Determine root causes of failures using statistical methods and recommend design, tolerance, or process changes. Investigate and resolve operational issues such as material variances, bottlenecks, and customer complaints. Prepare reports and presentations summarizing manufacturing performance information or trends. Manage BOM input and maintenance in ERP/PLM systems. Oversee reliability testing of instruments, using metrics such as MTBF/MTBR.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Optical, Mechanical, or a related engineering field with at least 3 years of experience in automation engineering roles, or a Master’s degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience. Experience with SolidWorks, Python, Arena, Oracle, Jira, Confluence. Experience with the design and manufacturing of optical subsystems used in complex systems. Experience troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing liquid handling, programmed automation equipment, or other electro-mechanical devices. Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities and demonstrate a high level of urgency. Proven troubleshooting skills for complex equipment and systems, including supporting utility services. Strong planning and organizational abilities. Excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication with a diverse customer base.

Below is the base pay range for this full time position.  The actual base pay will depend on several factors unique to each candidate, including one’s skills, qualifications, and experience.  At 10x, base pay is also just one component of the Company’s total compensation package.  This role is also eligible for 10x’s equity grants, its comprehensive health and retirement benefit programs, and its annual bonus program or sales incentive program.  Your 10x recruiter can share more about the Company’s total compensation package during the hiring process.

Pay Range$129,000—$175,000 USD
