L3Harris Space and Airborne Systems Australia is a Brisbane based subsidiary of L3Harris and part of our ICI Division. We provide design, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced electronic warfare components and subsystems using cutting edge wideband radio frequency and photonic technology. We are a trusted, sovereign design and production partner to the Australian Department of Defence and an established exporter to global defence primes.

What the role will involve

Recent growth of L3Harris Space & Airborne Systems Australia (SASA) means further opportunities exist within the Mechanical Engineering Design team to support ongoing project work in the mechanical design and production of a range of new and existing products.Specific responsibilities include:

Design of new packages for microwave subsystems, which will predominantly be used in an airborne environment or similar or modification of existing productsMechanical design and solid part modeling, thermal analysis and dynamic analysis using either manual calculations or a CAD/FEA package, whichever is most effective for the design activities at the time.Familiarity with software packages for solid modeling, thermal analysis and dynamic analysis, such as Solidworks, is requiredProduction of mechanical drawings and assembly documentation.  Familiarity with drawing packages such as Autocad and DraftSight is requiredMinimising size and weight in package designsDesign test jigs and/or fixtures for environmental testing of prototypes and production unitsQualification testing of new products, including vibration, shock, humidity, etcEvaluation and development of manufacturing processes to improve quality and efficiencySelection and management of subcontractorsCreation of part numbers in the ERP system including required procurement informationAbility to generate a bill of materials for entry into the ERP systemWork with Procurement to source and procure parts required for prototypes/productionAbility to deal with customers and present design details during review e.g. customer design reviewsReview project schedules and meet financial and time constraintsTake part in manufacture and test of modules when exceptional manufacturing work load requires thisProvide Engineering support to manufacturing as requiredMaintain a focus on producing quality products and either recommend enhancements which will promote customer satisfaction or cost reductionsRecommend enhancements from time to time to the company’s actions in achieving outstanding customer satisfaction

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role and to best leverage the opportunities provided by L3Harris, some skills & experience ideal applicants will bring include;

Degree in mechanical engineering2+ years’ experience in a similar roleFamiliarity with modelling software packages, such as Solidworks, for thermal analysis, solid part modelling, dynamic analysis, etc.Familiar with drawing software such as Autocad and/or DraftSightAbility to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary teamExcellent computer skillsExcellent communication skills, both verbal and writtenAbility to communicate clearly and concisely to internal and external partiesAccuracy, thoroughness, persistence and attention to detailFamiliar with a production environment
