HDR is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Power and Hydropower team in Charlotte or Raleigh, NC. This team provides engineering consulting services to electric utilities and independent power producers located across the U.S. This individual will be expected to lead and support a variety of projects involving mechanical balance of plant upgrades at existing hydropower and thermal generation facilities, major mechanical equipment upgrades at existing hydropower and thermal generation facilities, and feasibility studies for new pumped storage hydropower projects. They will work with a multi-discipline group of engineers and technicians providing engineering and design services to power sector clients. Typical projects involve life extension and system upgrades of existing hydropower and thermal generating facilities as well as design of new facilities.

In the role of Mechanical Hydropower Engineer, we'll count on you to:Produce mechanical system designs including PIDs, equipment sizing, detailed design, and system calculationsPrepare equipment and design specificationsPerform equipment and contractor bid evaluations (on conformance with technical requirements)Perform site inspections which may require confined space entryProvide field support during installation, testing, and start-upPerform feasibility studies and conceptual design evaluationsSupport pumped storage concept studies, pre-feasibility and feasibility studiesPrepare project engineering cost estimatesAssist with client presentations and preparation of client proposalsCoordinate the work of Mechanical Engineers within a multi-discipline team throughout a project's developmentEstablish effective client relationships and participate in marketing, design and production meetings with regard to mechanical systemsServe as the mechanical lead on multiple simultaneous projectsConduct schematic, design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with the Project Manager, and other discipline engineersCoordinate workload through the entire project’s development to complete documents on scheduleTrack the financial aspects of projects, and coordinate and adjust work efforts with the project team to ensure work is completed within the parameters of the agreed-upon budget and scheduleParticipate with the Project Manager, Regional Controller and Regional Director in project reviews with corporate management as neededPerform other duties as neededPreferred Qualifications5 years of relevant experience including experience in design and operational support of electrical generation stationsExperience with preparing procurement and design specifications for new installations as well as upgrade/replacement of existing equipment requiredExperience with design of power station mechanical systems (e.g., cooling water, lube oil, governor hydraulics, and compressed air)Must have the ability to work collaboratively with othersStrong written and verbal communication skillsStrong organizational skillsAttention to detail, self-directed learning skills, ability to meet deadlines, and multi-tasking abilityPrevious experience in Project Lead Engineer role in Mechanical EngineeringExperience with the design, manufacture, testing and operation of hydroelectric generating station mechanical equipment including turbines, pump-turbines, pumps, valves, compressors, and other mechanical componentsExperience with the preparation of feasibility studies for new pumped storage hydroelectric facilitiesDemonstrated leadership skills, previous team coordination and project management experienceExperience with NavisWorks, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit, and/or other 3D database driven design processesDesire to lead teams as a Team LeaderLocal candidates are preferredLI-SM1

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in EngineeringProfessional Engineer (PE) licensePrevious experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software. (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture
