DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

This position is responsible for keeping work areas clean and orderly as well as operating industrial maintenance equipment within a shop environment. This position requires a CDL and is bid based on seniority and business need 

 

EQUIPMENT OPERATION 

Operate forklift, mobile crane, trackmobile, shop tractor, and power hand tools 

 

FUEL TRUCK DRIVER 

Drive fuel tanker trucks on roadways and BNSF property to fuel locomotives where required 

 

EQUIPMENT AND SHOP MAINTENANCE 

Sand, fuel and clean locomotives 

Clean and organize shop work area (sweep and clean work surfaces, store parts, empty and discard garbage) 

Operate power-driven equipment such as a vacuum cleaner, electric broom, or steam cleaning gun

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Extreme all-weather conditions 

Walk and perform work on uneven surfaces 

Safety sensitive work environment 

May be required to handle hazardous materials

SHIFTS/HOURS 

Full-time (40 hours/week) 

Subject to seniority and governed by union agreement 

Mechanical shops operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week with three 8-hour shifts including weekends, holidays, and overtime 

 

TRAVEL 

Minimal 

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS 

21 years of age or older 

Have a valid CDL, with test endorsements for combination vehicle, air brake, and HAZMAT or able to obtain one within 60 days of employment 

Ability to report for duty at the designated work location 

Able to work safely in the above working conditions 

Able to work the above shift/hours 

Ability to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English 

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without assistance 

Ability to visually distinguish among red, blue, green and yellow colors 

Ability to discriminate and differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) in the work environment 

Ability to use hands and use hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling 

Ability to climb ladders and on/off equipment 

Ability to occasionally work from various heights 

Ability to bend, walk, stand and sit occasionally with breaks 

Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner
