Mechanical Technician (National Transonic Facility)

Mechanical Technician needed to support the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering (CMOE) contract located at NASA Langley Research Center. The Mechanical Technician is part of a team that supports wind tunnel facilities and other facilities. This position is a combination of old and new equipment, and the work is hands-on, varied, and unique. 

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will join a team to safely, effectively, and efficiently operate and maintain mechanical systems in NASA LaRC wind tunnels, liquid nitrogen generation plant, and other facilities.

Follow established safety policies and procedures and perform work in accordance with policies and procedures while maintaining a high standard of quality and workmanship in performance of all duties. Working knowledge of safety practices common to industry including FOD control and LOTO is beneficial.

Experience with operation and maintenance of rotating machinery, hydraulic and pneumatic system, pumps, valves, cooling water systems, and production, transfer, and storage of cryogenic liquids is preferred.

Perform preventive maintenance on, inspection of, and operate equipment per documented procedures.

Must be able to read relevant technical drawings and specifications.

Assembles wind tunnel models for testing; installs, routes, and calibrates instrumentation.

Operates other equipment including, but not limited to, industrial forklifts, man-lifts, and cranes.

Must be able to climb ladders and steps, enter and work in confined spaces, lift up to 35 lbs.

Willing to work all shifts and overtime. *

U.S. Citizenship required. Two (2) years of college with courses in engineering, mathematics or related engineering courses, plus four (4) years relevant mechanical experience or any equivalent combination of relevant education and training that can be documented by a certificate or diploma from a reputable organization, school, or trade school program and experience for a total of six (6) years. Knowledge of OSHA Lockout/Tagout program is preferred.

Must have good communication skills, be detail-oriented, able to work with a team, and have good problem-solving skills. Consideration given for military training, technical school, or aviation maintenance training.

Office environment. (10%). Test/Industrial Environment – May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals and industrial facilities. (85%)

Travel between facilities and test operations may be required and may bring exposure to loud noise and potentially hazardous equipment and chemical operations. (5%)

Physical Requirements
Must have sufficient mobility to enter into confined spaces, crawl into or onto various assemblies while maintaining a clear vision of safety is required. Potential exposure to high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, propellants and the like. (85%)
Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions.
Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist and sit for extended periods as well as climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 lbs. (85%)

U.S. Citizenship required. A valid driver’s license is required. Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety/risk hazard to the employee or others. The work environment requires the ability to cooperate and work with individuals at all levels of the company and the client.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance as required.
