Enabling the movement towards advanced chip design, KLA's Global Products Group (GPG), which is responsible for creating all of KLA’s metrology and inspection products, is looking for the best and the brightest research scientist, software engineers, application development engineers, and senior product technology process engineers. The Broadband Plasma Division (BBP) provides market-leading patterned wafer optical inspection systems for leading-edge IC manufacturing. Logic, foundry, and memory customers depend on BBP products to detect yield-critical defects for process debug and excursion monitoring at advanced process nodes. BBP flagship products include the 29xx and 39xx series which leverage Broadband Plasma technology to capture a wide range of defects with ultimate sensitivity at the optical inspection speeds needed for inline defect monitoring.

We are seeking Mechanical Engineering Intern to join a product development group in Milpitas, CA to help develop an innovative wafer inspection tool.

Position Description & Responsibilities

We are looking for a Mechatronics Engineering student expecting to graduate in 2025-2027 who is hands on, highly motivated, and a team player. The candidate will join a world class team of engineers and scientists working on a next-generation electron beam microscopy for the semiconductor industry. The candidate will be expected to tackle a project scoped to be completed during the summer term. The project will involve working with high-precision semiconductor inspection equipment. The intern will work directly with multi-axis stages, precision positions, position sensors, and motion controllers. Tasks will include characterizing stage motion and developing novel methods to calibrate stage motion. The candidate will be expected to identify new positions sensors for use in stage characterization and to develop methods to use sensor output to improve the accuracy of stage calibration and motion control. The candidate will be expected to design components and test stands as needed, provide solutions to challenging problems, and effectively transition results to the group for continued experiments or integration.

We are looking for creative, self-motivated engineers who are interested in contributing to new technology development and solving cutting-edge technical problems. Ideal candidates will have the following competencies.

Good oral and written communication, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to demonstrate ownership of work tasks, comfortable driving mechanical design projects within a team

Strong engineering fundamentals and analytical problem-solving skills in the area(s) of mechatronics, mechanical, and/or electrical engineering.

Collaboration with cross-functional teams to determine design requirements, implement best design practices, and achieve functional product design solution.

Recommended skills

Experience in several of these areas is desirable:

Mechanical/product design experience in 3D CAD software. (PTC Creo preferred)

Control theory and mechatronics, including characterization of motion control dynamics, bandwidth, and stability

Hands-on experience with precision motion control actuators, sensors, and controllers

Embedded systems with digital signal processing and/or optical interconnects

Electronics hardware integration, characterization, testing, and data acquisition. Interfacing to hardware via RS232, GPIB, ethernet, or other relevant interface

Measurement and instrumentation, including the use of oscilloscopes and function generators

Programming in Python, C/C++/C# and/or MATLAB

Experience with vacuum systems and/or vacuum-based metrology equipment, such as scanning electron microscopes (SEMs)

Experience working in cleanroom environments for semiconductor device fabrication

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

At least 3 years of course study at an accredited university in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

Demonstrated skill and understanding of engineering fundamentals.

Lab experience and previous internship experience in the semiconductor industry is strongly desired.
