SUMMARY:

 

The Technologist must perform medical laboratory test, procedures and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.  Prepare samples to transport to reference laboratory.  Performs electrocardiogram tracings for interpretation and assists the laboratory staff by performing the following duties.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Conducts chemical analyses of blood and body fluids to determine presence of normal

     and abnormal components.

 

Reviews test results for accuracy and notify appropriate patient care personnel of test

     results that fall into the CRITICAL VALUE range.  We will have a comprehensive

     level of understanding as regards variables in QC results and will be able to direct co-

     workers with corrective action processes.  Will have a comprehensive level of

     understanding as regards variables in QC Peer Data and comparative analysis charts

     and/or graphs and will be able to assist director and co-workers in proper use of these

     tools.

 

Performs Quality Control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical data.

 

Performs daily startup procedures, routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.

 

Verifies proper instrument function by performing calibrations, instrument checks and documents these activities.

 

Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement and maintenance needed and/or performed on equipment.

 

Performs blood group type and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes.

 

Inoculates culture media from a variety of sources for the identification of pathogens and performance of sensitivity testing.

 

Performs blood collection by venipuncture and micro-collection techniques.

 

Performs arterial punctures and analyzes specimen.

 

Performs patient hookups for Holter Monitor testing.

Acquires electrocardiogram tracings for physician interpretation.

 

Has a clear understanding of Medical Necessity laws when reviewing outpatient requisition orders from physician.

 

Understands and abides by HIPPA standards and maintain patient confidentiality in highest professional regard.

 

Has a working knowledge and understanding of LIS system and is able to retrieve data when needed.

 

May be asked to collect data for Quality improvement studies.

 

Keeps current regarding developments in technical instrumentation, trends and techniques in medical laboratory testing through appropriate technical journals, as well as internal educational programs.

 

Assists Pathologist or other physicians with certain procedures, such as bone marrow aspiration, when required.

 

Will be responsible for technical orientation of new hires in the laboratory department.

 

Will assist Laboratory Director with competency evaluations of technicians and phlebotomists.

 

Will have a comprehensive level of understanding as regards variables in QC results and will be able direct co-workers with corrective action processes.

 

Will have a comprehensive level of understanding as regards variables in QC Peer Data and comparative analysis charts and/or graphs and will be able assist director and co-workers in proper use of these tools.

 

Will monitor and supervise the daily operation of the laboratory in the absence of the Laboratory Director.

 

Will accept and complete special projects as assigned by Laboratory Director.<
