Purpose

To serve as the primary point of contact throughout the cycle of care for patients served in the Integrated Practice Units (IPUs) at UT Health Austin to include collecting vital signs, conducting patient assessments during clinic visits and assisting providers during patient exams.

Responsibilities

Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Serves as the first point of contact for patients served in the clinical care units. Assesses patient's general condition and takes vital signs and weight. Screens patients for appropriate information. Establishes follow-up of care plan based on preferences and choices (e.g. virtual monitoring, virtual touch points, or in-person/phone follow-up). Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provides reminders for care plan tasks and support behavior modification. When appropriate, refers patients to internal or external services to ensure their needs are fully met. Instructs patients in collection of samples and tests.

Sets patient expectations about team-based model and clinic experience. Works with a multidisciplinary team of providers to identify and schedule patient visits. Attends multidisciplinary case conference and team huddles to convey patient's situation and background to the team. Supports and participates in educational and research initiatives within the clinic. Participates in critical evaluation of patient care to ensure that the program continues to improve and evolve in its care pathways.

Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls.

Facilitates patient's journey through the healthcare system (scheduling, referrals, and obtaining medications). As indicated by the patient, attends visit to serve as an advocate and combines treatment recommendations at the end of the visit into a viable care plan.

Supports and assists providers during patient exams, treatments, or procedures. Maintains and restocks supplies and equipment for patient exam and treatment rooms. Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares list of medical supplies needed. Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination and testing of patients.

Educates patient/family about diagnostic procedures, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.

Maintains/reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Records tests and examination results in patient's chart. Maintains patient confidentiality.

Provides support and guidance to patients who are completing pre-clinic surveys.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Certification as a Medical Assistant. Certification must be applicable practice as a medical assistant in the state of Texas. Requires strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced multi-physician practice environment. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, staff, and patients. The Dell Medical School is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to excellence within the learning health system.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience performing procedures requiring sterile technique, prepping patients for procedures. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Salary Range

$43,500+ depending on qualifications
