Job Description
Under direct supervision, assists physicians and clinicians with patient care duties in a clinical environment. Promotes efficient patient flow and patient care, including exams and procedures. Performs clinic support tasks such as clerical tasks, answering phones, and maintaining physician’s schedule. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.
ResponsibilitiesEscort patients to and from exam rooms, physician offices, and treatment rooms as appropriate.Record patient data prior to each physician visit, including vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes.Obtain all necessary patient records as required by the physician prior to treatment or procedures.Prepare and stock exam/treatment rooms and order supplies as needed.Assist physicians with exams and procedures as requested.Administer subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, as delegated by RN or physician.Maintain all exam/treatment room disinfection protocols.Respond to patients’ calls as requested.Perform other administrative duties such as typing, filing, faxing, and reception as requested by supervisor or physician.Alert nurse/physician of abnormal vitals or any important information given by the patient.Collect inbound meaningful use data, such as flu documentation, initial height and weight.Print medication lists for patients and fill out disability forms.Schedule blood transfusions, therapeutic phlebotomies, and order special tests (e.g., Kras testing, epidermal growth factor receptor tests, Myriad, Paradigm).May enter orders under a provider’s direction and supervision.Essential SkillsBCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification required.Minimum three years experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant.Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants preferred.Phlebotomy experience preferred.Patient care skills.Customer service skills.Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).Additional Skills & QualificationsHigh school graduate or equivalent.Certified Medical Assistant preferred.Some state regulations may require specific certifications to work as a Medical Assistant.Work Environment
The physical demands of this job require full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 lbs. Corrected vision and hearing to normal range is required.
Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM in an oncology office.
