MEDICAL ASSISTANT

SITE OF SERVICE:

·       Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA (NMCP) and its associated Branch Health/Medical Clinics (BHC) and Tricare Prime Clinics (TPC). - Norfolk

 

POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:

·       Education: Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.

•      Be a graduate from a medical assistant training program, OR

•      A formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces, OR

•      Other formal program as specified in the position specific Task Order, OR

•      A formal program approved by the MTF

·       Experience: 1 year experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 3 years.

·       Certification: Current Basic Life Saver (BLS) hands on certification through the AHA

·       U.S. Citizenship: HCWs performing under this contract shall be U.S. citizens.

·       English Language Requirement: The Contractor shall ensure that all HCWs providing services under this contract are able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate.

·       HCW Physical Capability: HCWs shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

·       Medical Assistants – The HCW shall provide services within the scope of their competencies, the applicable duties provided in the basic contract, and the following:

·       Prepare exam rooms prior to patient's arrival.

·       Obtain patient's medical record following appropriate procedures.

·       Check patient's vital signs, to include temperature, respiration, pulse, weight and blood pressure.

·       Obtain and document patient's current medical history, drug history, chief complaints, allergies and vital signs on the correct Standard Form before patient is in the exam room.

·       Assist the provider as needed during exams.

·       Perform diagnostic procedures when ordered, to include EKGs, urine dip sticks, phlebotomy, etc.

·       Transport patients to other clinical areas as needed.

·       Check each chart for the provider's signature, stamp, and each patient's diagnosis prior to returning the chart to Health Records.

 

·       After a physician has verified the medicine and dosage, the HCW shall administer medication to patients.

·       Obtain lab and x-ray results.

·       Maintain exam room stock levels and perform routine maintenance of exam rooms, to include dusting, cleaning wash basins, etc.

·       Complete lab and x-ray requisitions in accordance with clinic policies.

·       Enter demographic data into the computer upon patient check-in; enter diagnosis and departing time when patient is released.

·       Answer telephone and transcribe accurate messages.

 

HOURS:

 

·       Medical Assistant (PDHRA, BHC NAVSTA Norfolk)

·       Services shall be provided Monday through Friday, between the hours of 0700 and 2000 hours.

·       The HCW will be scheduled for a shift within the time range depending on patient volume and clinical scheduling needs.

·       Shifts may be scheduled for an eight and half (8.5) to twelve (12) period, to include an uncompensated thirty (30) minute to sixty (60) minute lunch break, respectively.

·       Individual shift hours may occasionally be extended to accommodate travel team requirements or mass screening evolution, however in no instance will the shift exceed twelve (12) hours in length. 

·       The HCWs may be required to occasionally work a Saturday shift to accommodate the deployment training schedule. The requirement for working on a Saturday will not exceed twelve (12) Saturdays per year.

·       In no instance will the HCW be required to provide services in excess of eighty (80) hours per two-week period.

·       The clinic is open on the following Federal Holidays: Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday, President's Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran's Day. Services shall not be required on federal holidays when the clinic is open.

·       Fulltime employees are required to work 40 hours a week.

·       Part time employees are required to work 29 hours a week.

·       PRN employees MUST work 16 hours a month in each clinic covered

·       Required to have 56 hours (7days) of clinic orientation. Without this you won’t be able to pick up shifts.

·       I have read and understood the hours.

 

Base Down Days:

 

·       During a planned closure of the facility due to training, closures before or after holidays family down days, Employee will only be compensated for the actual hours worked. If the clinic is closed and employee is not able to work, employee will be required to use leave or take LWOP (without penalty). 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Teamwork skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
