POSITION PURPOSE
Schedules patient appointments. Provides basic patient care during patients stay in department. Obtains chart information for consultation, re-evaluation and follow-up appointments. Maintains supply levels. Transports patients to and from Radiation Oncology Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Trinity Health.
2. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
3. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
4. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
5. Follows all SJMH policies and procedures including infection control (use of body substance isolation and use of personal protective equipment when in contact with body fluids)
6. Interacts with patients and performs skills and tasks for patients in relation to their development age, maturity level, cultural and spiritual preferences.
7. Introduces self and explains patient care role.
8. Performs specific nursing interventions and assists physicians as requested by nursing and medical staff. Assists with the patient education process and is knowledgeable about the specific patient instructions.
9. Assists in establishing and maintaining a patient care environment that is clean, safe, and conducive to patient/family well being. Ensures exam room supplies are maintained. Routinely reviews supplies to dispose of expired items.
10. Coordinates and schedules simulation and treatment appointments. Distributes daily treatment schedule and weekly blood lists.
11. Copies charts and patient records and forward information as appropriate per department policy.
12. Obtains laboratory results, radiology reports, and referring physician(s) reports for patient appointments. Process orders for tests, as requested. Schedules diagnostic tests, as requested.
13. Answers phone and communicates messages. Requests lab and diagnostic studies from telephone or computer and communicates them to appropriate staff.
14. Prepares exam rooms for patient visits. Ensures appropriate equipment/medical supplies are available for the physician staff. Assists with patient examination, when necessary.
15. Obtains patient body weights, routine vital signs and temperature.
16. Assists patients into exam room, collects and documents weight, blood pressure, temperature, and makes patient as comfortable as possible.
17. Assists physicians, during exams and treatments, as needed.
18. Orients patients and families to the waiting/changing and treatment areas.
19. Transports patients to and from Radiation Oncology department for treatments and examinations. Understand the operation of oxygen tanks, suction units, and IVs. Provides daily updates of on-treatment inpatients.
20. Participates in efforts to maintain and monitor patient safety through the appropriate application and use of safety devices (side rails, vest restraints, and alternative restraints).
21. Ensures proper working order and storage of transporting equipment.
22. Assists patient/family in the use of hospital equipment (wheelchairs, IV poles).
23. Collects and disposes of soiled linens and gowns.
24. Inventories medical, surgical, non-narcotic pharmacy, linens, and nutritional supplies and re-stocks as necessary.
25. Cleans medical instruments after use. Maintains order/environment in exam and treatment rooms.
26. Maintains nursing station supplies. Ensures adequate supply of O2 levels in oxygen tanks.
27. Demonstrates cost effectiveness through prudent use of human and material resources.
28. Participates in activities that facilitate efficient and effective unit operations.
29. Seek ongoing learning experiences by attending appropriate inservices, continuing education and mandatory programs.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Experience: One month on the job training and previous medical field experience.
Certification/Licensure: None
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and other hospital personnel.
Ability to read and write in order to follow instructions and record patient information.
Ability to lift patients and move transport equipment for transportation purposes.
Basic typing skills for preparation of lists and schedules on computer.
