Summary:
The Medical Director Hospital Medicine is an academic and clinical faculty member of the Department of Medicine at Northern Dutchess Hospital. Will divide time between the provision of attending-level medical care to hospitalist inpatients and participation as a teaching faculty member in the Northern Dutchess Hospital family medicine residency program. Provide inpatient attending-level care (i.e. hospitalist service) for those patients referred by physicians in private practice who participate in the Northern Dutchess Hospital Hospitalist Program and for unassigned patients. Perform clinical consultative coverage for non-medical inpatients including the surgical service and inpatient rehabilitation service as requested. The majority of clinical care provided by the Clinician will be provided in the context of the medical residency program and the supervision and education of medical residents. Anticipated that the Medical Director will devote approximately 70% of time to direct patient care and 30% to administrative duties.
Responsibilities:
1. In cooperation with other Department of Medicine faculty and in the context of supervising and educating the internal medicine residents inpatient teams, provide inpatient attending medical care for unassigned patients, and patients from primary care physicians who participate in the Northern Dutchess Hospital Hospitalist Service.
2. Participate in internal medicine faculty on call night and weekend coverage for general internal patient admissions. Night call will in all instances serve to back up Northern Dutchess Hospital resident house staff.
3. Participate (in collaboration with assigned residents) in the Department of medicine Consultation Service to provide clinical consultative services for the non-medical inpatients including surgery, the rehabilitation service, and obstetrics.
4. Communicate regularly with hospitalist patients' primary care physicians, following procedures established by the Hospital Medicine Department and the Chair of the Department of Medicine. Work to establish outstanding satisfaction among the physicians and patients who access the Northern Dutchess Hospital Hospitalist Program.
5. Participate in analyses of CPT billing code distribution and modify documentation and billing practices to achieve accurate, optimal reimbursement for work performed. Provide appropriate and necessary medical documentation to assure complete and accurate billing.
6. Participate in the review and quality assessment of inpatient medical records including those produced by medical students and internal medical residents. Act upon the results reviews and quality assessment to improve both medical records preparation and health care delivery within Northern Dutchess Hospital. Participates in and act upon results derived from quality improvement (CQI) and quality assurance (QA) activities of Northern Dutchess Hospital as they pertain to adult medical health care delivery.
7. Evaluate the performance of nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other allied health care personnel as required. Evaluate the performance of medical students and residents. Provide feedback to residents and students regarding their quality of patient care, record keeping, fund of general medical knowledge, and interactions with staff and patients.
8. Participate as a principle faculty member in the Northern Dutchess Hospital Family Medicine Residency. Work closely with both the Chairman of Medicine and the Program Director, Northern Dutchess Family Medicine residency, to design, administer, and continually improve the curriculum and educational programs for inpatient internal medicine residents training.
9. Participate in the residents selection committee for the Northern Dutchess Family Medicine Residency. Interview residency including interviewing and reviewing applications of prospective interns and residents.
10. Participate in the design, coordination and implementation of internal medicine education experiences for medical students.
12. Participate in the development of mechanisms to assure the appropriate, efficient utilization of resources by clinical personnel. Monitor overall resource consumption and utilization by individual providers and by diagnosis. Participate in other faculty, staff and committee meetings as required.
13. Serve as a hospital leader in implementing strategic goals and objectives of the Northern Dutchess Hospital organization surrounding quality, efficient resource use and patient satisfaction.
14. Develop innovative programs and projects that improve patient care and/or resident education. Develop and collect metrics for such projects and promote house staff participation. As appropriate, develop and publish manuscripts about such programs and projects in peer-reviewed journals.
15. Work to develop publishable data that supports the application of grants competitive for extramural funding. Participate in the development of grant proposals to secure funding for such research.
16. Participate as requested in community and city organizations to provide health and educational services, health information, and information regarding the mission and clinical services of Northern Dutchess Hospital.
17. Participate in the development of educational materials for patients and promotional materials for Northern Dutchess Hospital.
18. Participate, as requested and appropriate, in print, radio and TV media to promote public health education as well as the clinical services of Northern Dutchess Hospital.
19. Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
20. Performs other duties as assigned.
