The Medical Director of Critical Care at HMWB works in collaboration with Hospital Leadership and Department Directors to facilitate high-quality patient care in an effective manner and in accordance with ICARE values. The Medical Director plans, develops, coordinates, and implements with the direction and approval of the Utilization Review Committee and Senior Administration the processes, procedures, and practices of the health care services provided by the Intensive Care Unit. The Medical Director assures that the quality, safety, and appropriateness of those services are monitored and evaluated, and that appropriate actions based on findings are taken.
**Job Duties:**
+ Initiates, directs, and oversees the development of the Intensive Care Program.
+ The Medical Director (or his or her designee) will oversee interdisciplinary daily rounds in the Intensive Care Unit.
+ Provides appropriate medical direction in accordance with all applicable hospital policies and procedures.
+ Serves as the primary liaison between physicians and hospital employees with the Intensive Care Unit.
+ Monitors, evaluates, and assists in the implementation of performance improvement activities around identified quality, patient satisfaction and patient safety metrics as assigned by the Utilization Review Committee and Care Management Performance Improvement Steering Committee.
+ Actively collaborates with physicians and staff to comply with established quality indicators.
+ Actively participates in the medical component of the performance improvement program addressing patient outcomes such as Falls, Core Measures, SCIP measures, LOS, etc.
+ Participates in and exercises leadership in the development and implementation of protocols that support the highest quality of care.
+ Facilitates and Champions the use of hospital approved technology to improve quality care.
+ Assures that Medical Staff members operate in compliance with regulatory agencies.
+ Conducts medical reviews of patient medical status as needed to comply with delegated administrative functions. All audits of charts will be recorded and reported to the Utilization Review Committee.
+ May serve as Chair of the Critical Care Committee.
+ Actively participates in other meetings as needed and performs other duties as assigned.
+ In the event that the Critical Care Medical Director is temporarily unavailable to provide these services, s/he will delegate these duties to another qualified physicians approved by Hospital Senior Leadership.
+ WB Medical Director is accountable to Medical Director Center for Critical Care for quality, recruiting, MD and Faculty goals, also he is part of the system CC CMPI and center goals
+ Academic appointment is highly recommended
+ Should work to promote scholarly activities
**Qualifications:**
+ Graduation from an accredited School of Medicine.
+ Board Certification in Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, Surgery or the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine, Anesthesia or Surgery.
+ Texas Medical License or the ability to obtain state medical license in Texas as well as current Federal Drug Enforcement Agency license and Texas DPS controlled substance license.
+ Current BLS and ACLS certification.
+ Must be a member of the Medical Staff with uninterrupted privileges abiding by the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.
+ Must be in compliance with the Conflict of Interest policy of the Methodist Health Care System. On an annual basis, identifies potential conflicts of interest and current employment, leadership and other influential relationships with other institutions including, but not limited to hospitals, manufacturers, and suppliers.
+ Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with others, to be able to facilitate growth and development of the program’s patient care team.
**Evaluation:**
The Medical Director will receive an annual 360-degree performance evaluation that involves participation from private physicians, nursing staff, unit/department staff, ancillary staff as appropriate and senior administration. Hospital Senior Management and the Utilization Review Committee will review the results. Each Medical Director will meet at least annually with the Chief Nursing Officer to review their administrative goals and the progress being made towards them.
