Medical Interpreter - ASL Trilingual

Location: Newark, NJ Duration: 2 month contract Pay rate: $ 30.79/hour **Summary:** Under the direction of the Manager Patient Relations – Patient Experience, serves as a medical interpreter for patients and staff. Relays medical and other information between individuals who communicate in different languages, including different spoken languages and sign language, in compliance with hospital policies and procedures, and patient confidentiality regulations and guidelines. May provide trilingual interpretation services using Spanish or Portuguese and ASL. **Responsibilities include:** + Serves as a language interpreter for patients and their families who have limited proficiency with English; helps to facilitate effective communication with University Hospital’s linguistically diverse consumers. + Serves as a medical interpreter for patients who are deaf or hearing impaired and their families, by translating the spoken word into sign language. + Functioning as a trilingual interpreter, facilitates communication among English speaker, a speaker of Spanish or Portuguese, and an ASL user. Interprets in all three languages while maintaining the fundamental meaning of the message. + Provides assistance as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes. + Clarifies instructions and follow-up steps in a diplomatic, effective manner; diffuses tensions in stressful situations by remaining calm and impartial. + Understands the hospital system of service delivery and explains hospital resources, office protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients. + Serves as a resource to providers and staff in understanding the language services program and ensuring equipment such as dual handset phones and other assistive devices are available. + Works collaboratively with clinical and non-clinical staff to ensure an appropriate communication resource is made available on a timely basis for effective communication. + Researches and maintains knowledge of medical terminology and technical health care information to ensure accuracy in the interpretation of the meanings of words, concepts, and practices in a medical setting. + As needed and assigned, serves in the role of a Patient Representative by identifying patient concerns, investigating, and contributing to resolution of patient complaints. Documents such complaints and comments concerning the hospital experience. **Qualifications include:** + A Bachelor’s Degree in a science, language, or human services area is required + Fluency in English and American Sign Language (ASL) required + Fluency in sign language must be demonstrated by certification offered by at least one of the following: The National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID); the National Association of the Deaf (NAD); or the Educational Interpreters Performance Assessment (EIPA) or must be obtained within twelve (12) months of employment + Additional fluency in Spanish or Portuguese is strongly preferred, with a minimum of Advanced Mid proficiency level according to ACTFL + Specific training or experience in medical interpretation required + An understanding of diverse cultural/socio-economic backgrounds, along with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well under pressure required.
